I bought 'em as they came out though I've only just recently started going through the TV series timeline. Classic anime shot/edited on film with competent HD transfers are definitely my bag.

The TV series is such a comfy watch. A lot of the criticism leveled towards it is that it's not as serious as the first OVAs and movies, but I feel that's what makes it a great contrast.

I've really been enjoying it. I just finished it and started New Files. The whole time watching the TV series, I noticed how nobody ever got too badly hurt, and I don't recall there being any killings. It just kinda...feels good.

I remembered why I never picked up the Maiden Japan BDs for the first two movies: no theatrical audio. I've actually never gotten around to seeing the second and third movies, so I'll probably revisit the original OVA and watch the movies after finishing New Files. Great series and nobody really talks about it.

The Wings of Honnêamise Film Celebrates Its 35th Anniversary with 4K Remaster Edition

Revival screening is planned in 2022

Exactly 35 years ago today, March 14, 1987, Gainax and Bandai's first original anime feature film Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise was released in Japan. The film was written/directed by Hiroyuki Yamaga and created by many other top creators, including Hideaki Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto , and Shinji Higuchi, with music by the oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.

To celebrate its 35th anniversary, the film will get the 4K-remaster treatment. Under the supervision of director Hiroyuki Yamaga, the film will be scanned in 4K from the 35mm original master positive film and remastered in 4K to vividly reproduce the information contained in the film. In addition, a revival screening of the 4K remastered version will be held in 2022 (using the original sound of the 1987 version).

Message from writer/director Hiroyuki Yamaga:

”Standing in the World Born on March 14, 1987"

There is a word: "impractical proposition." It is a theory that we don't know if it can be linked to reality, which is conceived only on the desk. Thirty-eight years ago, Toshio Okada-san and I were working on this.

All that was on the table at the coffee shop in front of Momoya Station in Ikuno Ward, Osaka City, where the two of us were sitting facing each other, was a hand towel, water, and coffee. There was not even a sheet of notepaper.

If there was anything unique about the two men's impractical proposition, it was that the topic we were discussing was itself about "impractical proposition."

Can the logic spoken within the space of this coffee shop rival the weight of that world, which is like an endlessly flowing river, once you step out of the store?

Three years later, on March 14, 1987. It was the day when that impractical proposition was linked to this reality.

Man...hope this new 4K-remaster eventually makes it out over here, preferably on physical media.

It’s still too early to say. FWIW… the previous Japanese Blu-ray release included English subtitles.

Unless the job is tackled by a truly incompetent person, it will look better than the 2007 HD master that has underscan, poor grain retention and some pixellated scenes (and whom the master tape was lost – all overseas blu-rays are re-encode of the Bandai 2007 BD file).

I do wish it that it will look perfect. This movie is visually stunning. Also there's I believe one very short scene which was upscaled from LD in the 2007 BD (in town, after they leave the bar at the beginning of the movie). If they can manage to source this scene from a film print it would be great.

A few months ago, I actually had a dream that the Wings of Honneamise was getting a UHD release (!), so a new 4K remaster sounds cool.
It’s such a magnificent film, an all-time favourite (live action or anime), so I just hope it gets the best possible treatment, and we do end up getting a top UHD release.

Wooo!! It's big celebration time. Any new Anime UHD Blu-ray release is a reason to rejoice for me. Triple points if they include English subtitles (just like in this case!)

Yep, I did check the link! It's very good that it also comes with the English dub, if I ever get this I might give it a try; it's great too that this will also be available for sale at Amazon. One more entry to add for the list of English Friendly Japanese releases.

Price is a bit uppity for me at the moment, though, so it may be a while before I'll get the chance to purchase this. It's also competing in priority with a couple of other Anime 4K UHDs from Japan I have been considering buying, namely Mary and the Witch's Flower, and a possible edition of Suzume no Tojimari in the future, since I'm not trusting Crunchyroll to release a competent disc for that one (after how the ex-Funimation force handled AKIRA's U.S. 4K), or to release anything at all for it in the States...

You could always wait and see if Anime Limited (UK) pick up the rights.
