Do you s'pose this will have all the infamous flash-frames included, as well? One or two only turned up on the original vhs releases long ago. No, I don't recall which one(s).
Also, I presume the vt damage in Flood that occurs right before Neil yells, "Rik's bedroom's on fire!" is not reparable, as the picture and sound when Rik is screaming, hanging from the door has always been janky from day one.. |

I remember seeing the flash frames on the original broadcast.
What was the actual point of them? |

According to one of the documentaries on YouTube about the show, it was simply meant as easter eggs for the people who bought the VHS tapes - giving them something they would only discover when they had the ability to freeze frame.

The Lving Doll Music video is missing from the extras? I guess this is something to do with the circumstance under which it was made, not being able to be used for profit or something? No Neil Hole in My Shoe video either, thats probably down to licensing?

Definitely going to wait for reviews of this because "The day of the triffids" were the bbc tried a similar sounding approach, ended up looking pretty bad. With that one, the outdoor filmic elements looked better than dvd, but the indoor upscaled or whatever they did looked terrible. Overal the old dvd with consistently poor PQ was a better viewing experience for me.

The BBC don't own Living Doll et al - it's copyright to Comic Relief, who would probably be asking quite a lot for its use. It has had at least one complete DVD release in the correct ratio on the 'Bottom: Mindless Violence' compilation/sampler.

Yeah, I watched that recently, interesting how they were gonna put one more flash frame in to explain all the others and the BBC decided (or someone did) they weren't allowed to do it anymore.

I'll habe to try and find the Mindless Violence dvd then. I've passed it a fair few times in charity shops etc, but never saw much of a reason to get it, not knowing about this. I do have the old Comic Relief VHS that has it on, but i'd like a disc. I'm still missing the first Live show on DVD as well, only having the vhs of that one.

On a side note, I've started a playlist for Young Ones bits on YouTube. If anyone knows of other bits please feel free to add.

I've said it before elsewhere, these old shows that switch from outside broadcast to studio is far more jarring than the efforts made to the Day of the Triffids bluray which look absolutely fine. Especially so to the average viewer. If you wanna be purist - dig out an old CRT TV, hook it up via analogue to a VHS player and enjoy. One could argue the very fact of putting the image onto a 1080p bluray disc is just as scandalous as de-interlacing and upscaling studio footage. Last edited by cherbert; 11-04-2022 at 03:45 PM. |

The average viewer wouldn't even notice a difference - because the film and video would probably look equally smooth with their motion smoothing set at factory default through to max. The average viewer is also less likely to buy a release like Triffids - those buying this will be more a dedicated fanbase for this sort of material, and yes that means an awful lot of people are going to have an issue when someone decided to filmize it. Oh what tosh. Accept your opinion isn't the only one, and that other's opinions have validity even if you don't agree. Last edited by oddbox83; 11-04-2022 at 03:40 PM. |
