Saw the trailer during the Amazing Spidey blu. Got me re-excited for this release. I loved this movie, infact I stand by what I said earlier when I said I thought this was better than the original and I'm a guy that loves the original.

This is overall the better cut of the film. They throw in a few more F-bombs to push it towards R rating. Plus, the violence is slightly kicked up a notch.

The 4 extra or more shots of the 3 boobed hooker was a nice add too in the DC.

Yeah, that too.

While I don't normally give SyFy.com articles any legitimacy, they have an interesting article posted on Blastr.com where Paul Verhoeven talks about why the Total Recall remake bombed and with Hollywood's fascination or remaking classic films into serious, darker versions of the originals:

http://blastr.com/2012/11/paul-verhoeven-explains-w.php

After reading it through, it kind of makes sense. While the remake was halfway decent, it just lacked the fun and silliness that made the original so much fun to watch. I still watch the original film, from time to time and I'll eventually purchase the remake when its on sale for $10. But, I think Hollywood needs to stop remaking the original films and get back into making original movies that people want to see.

Personally, I think that they should have simply just continued the series as a sequel, rather than as a reboot. I think it would have worked better as a sequel, anyways, because the character in the original film had so much more to explore.

I re-watched this and came to the conclusion that this film doesn't age well due to the excessive cheese. It used to be one of my favourite childhood movie.

I think they posted in the wrong thread and were maybe talking about the 1990 one.

Nope. They were referring to the remake, regarding their posted comment.

The original Total Recall (1990) cost $50 million to produce and they ended up with bringing in $262 million.
The remake Total Recall (2012) cost $125 million to produce and only brought in $196 million.

The remake was considered a failure by the studio, considering how much money each film made. In this case, the original Total Recall earned more money than the remake did, which proves that Hollywood shouldn't be raiding older films just to remake the film for a new generation. Maybe if they actually remastered the old classics and re-released them to theaters ... and to Blu-ray, then they wouldn't have the need to remake these films.

But they say this "It used to be one of my favourite childhood movie"

So either the poster is really young, or they were talking about the 1990 one.

Of course, he's going to say that. He's not going to admit a remake was better than his films.

I always thought Verhoeven was overrated. He loves sex and violence.

I'm not defending Paul V. But, I think that when you compare any original film to the remake, the original film is the one that will always leave a lasting impression on you. When I go into watching a remake, I try not to compare it with the original but rather try to enjoy as a good film in its own right. But, I have watched the Total Recall remake and the movie is just too dark and moody, which is a huge drastic change from the original film.

Most people aren't into watching dark and moody sci-fi films anymore. I think films like Blade Runner, Dark City and Watchmen work well for that concept of dark and moody sci-fi fantasy because they were original films that redefined the genre. When they decided to remake "Total Recall", they took a movie that was produced in a fun atmosphere that impacted with movie fans so much that they identified with the movie. But, when they decided to remake the film, even if they were going for something completely different, they made the film so dark and depressing that audiences did not connect with it.

I think we'll end up seeing Total Recall 2012 in the $10-12 bargain bin at Best Buy within six months. Don't get me wrong, the movie was better than I expected it to be and it was a fun watch, a fun popcorn movie. But, it strayed too far from the original concept. The one thing they should have stuck with was that "Mars" was such an integral part of the original short story and the original 1990 film that they didn't bother to go that route.

I think if they had "shifted" the locale of the film from Earth to Mars, that the whole concept, along with "The Fall", would have made much more sense.

I went into this film with very low expectations as I'm a huge fan of the original. That said, I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. They had a few nods to the original (

) that made me smile as well. I will probably pick up the Walmart version since I'm a sucker for SteelBooks.
