Default Need a little help with surround sound.

I want to get 5.1 surround for my tv/ps3 setup. Now i'm not picky cause i dont wanna spend that much money for this but i can honestly say i dont know jack about this stuff and im hoping some of you good people can help?

I'm thinking of getting these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yamaha-NSP11...outThisProduct from amazon. Now would i need anything else to get surround cause my dad's telling me i'll need an amp? thanks alot.

...that looks like a speaker package, which WOULD require an "amp" (in this case, I think the most cost-effective component to look at is a "receiver", as "amp"s are usually just the power source, where receivers do power and processing). I would say anything from Denon or Onkyo would be a good start for researching receivers.
Based on the listing in your link, it looks like you're from the UK? I saw in What HiFi? mag a favorable review for an Epos speaker package that I would choose over the Yamaha. don't remember the price, but it seemed relatively inexpensive.

Marcus,
I guess you're in the UK. The previous poster is right, the Yamaha setup you looked at is a speaker set. You'd need a receiver/amp to go with it to be able to get any sound from it.

You may want to look into this Sony setup (Home Theater in box, Sony Bravia line):

Hmm, that is one of those units that has a DVD and Surround Sound integrated into one unit.

Considering you want to be able to hookup your PS3 etc, I am not so sure this was the right choice. But then again, it's hard to tell from the specs listed on that amazon page. I hope it has HDMI and optical inputs on the back.

Actually if i would order the sony HT-DDW790 which is a 5.1 800w w/ an optical input. Im not so sure that the DVD home theather that was recomended would work all that great with the ps3 bc for one it might not have an optical input so all you might be able to get would be anolog sound instead of digital. Which in that case you will hear the same sound coming out from every speaker instead of idividual sounds. Also if you have a ps3 why would you need another dvd player when the ps3 upscales to 1080p that just seems like a step down to me. But all in all get a receiver because im sure it would work better for you.

or something like this

Marcus,
You're right: eventually, you will be the one who has to decide. I read the others' posts and went back and looked at the specs of the system I originally recommended. While it does say it has HDMI, it does not explicitly mention connectivity. The other 2 systems - 1 from Sony and the other from Denon - also look good.

While not trying to confuse matters: you may want to look into: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-HTSS110...2438356&sr=1-1

Again, everything DOES depend on your budget!

My $0.02!!!

Rup.

I went ahead and ordered the HT-DDW790 set up. I read some info on sony's site http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProdu...rround+Kit#tab and it looks pretty good. So thanks for all the input and i'll let you all know how it goes when it arrives. Cheers.
