Hey all, I'm new to the forum. I've been looking around and reading some posts here and there. You all seem to know your stuff. Well, I recently bought a brand new Sony Bravia 52" KDLW4100 LCD 1080p. I have Apple TV, PS3, and DirecTV all running through HDMI for video and sound to my TV, but I would like to get a surround sound system to run the HDMI sound (at least 3 HDMI inputs for my components) to the receiver while keeping the HDMI video to my TV. I don't know much about audio so I need some help. I'm 18 years old, so I'm on a tight budget. From what I've read I'm probably going to have to go with a HTIB. Any suggestions under 500$ would be great.
Thanks alot. |

I will advise you now dont do the HTIB. Many ppl get'em and then end up not being satisfied once they've been exposed to hearing a system with a hdmi capable receiver that can decode the new codecs. That is the way to go. Many of your entry level hdmi receiver will blow htibs away with just the basics: have more power, more dynamic sounding, more in depth tweakability and will hold your satisfaction level far longer. There are many entry level receivers that you can find for $300-$350 range that will outperform htib's. Hunt the forum for deals that ppl post up.

Yea stay clear from the HTIB's, only last year i bought a HTIB for 800 euro, it only decoded dolby digital, so i sold it for 200 euro (their not selling for anything higher these days - sony davis 10 btw) a few months ago, and bought myself the Sony STR-DG820 reciever for 350 euro and in time..a 5.1 speaker system...just make sure you get a speaker system of 8 ohms.

for starters look at my thread
there are tons of suggestions, tips & info in there from a budget under $500 to as much as $800 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=75784 also read the HT Virgin Thread https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=71252 speakers with no knowledge about HT audio is just as good as having an hdtv and using bunny ears only ![]() whats your budget? id go... try and find those polk rm6750s + onky 606 thatd be about $175+350! HTIB sound is okay for the short term, but ull want to upgrade anyways, so just save up. i am 19 years old... i saved up for about 6 months for just whatever, but it was well worth the wait. read ALL OF the HT virgin thread... thats what i did, or else ull just ask questions that were already asked by me LOL my final cost is on the last page in the thread or 2nd to last. i suggest u read through that because i was a complete audio noob and still am learning. U dont HAVE to get a HTIB. U can get a very good center + a pair of good fronts and be 100X better off then a crappy HTIB setup. trust me i went from a HTIB to these speakers and i want to rewatch all my movies, it goes from WATCHING movies to EXPERIENCING them. it is amazing, i am not even an audiophile or at least i dont think i am. Thanks for the help guys. I thought about it and will be staying away from HTIB, but for now I'm going to get a soundbar for now until I have enough to get a good receiver and quality speakers and take my time looking and getting quality. Once I find those two, I'll be giving my mother the soundbar after since she wants some sort of surround for sometime in the future.

u wont get the same experience with a soundbar, like u said ure gonna upgrade anyways, why waste your time?
just get a receiver + 2 fronts. work slowly. i know its hard but itll prevent u from upgrading from what ure gonna buy. its like buying a 32" and going okay im gonna upgrade as soon as u buy it to a 46" next year. |

My son in law has a Yamaha YSP800 in a 20 x 18 room in the basement and let me tell you it sounds REAL good.. there is a definite presence of sound behind you and nice crisp sound.. with the Yamahas you need ideal conditions as the sound beams bounce against the walls.. I'm thinking of buying the 1100 model ..
