Well, Dumb and Dumber on DVD has a full screen version and it looks way nicer (we get to see more picture all around).
Now, one of the most popular examples of Open Matte is from Spider-Man 2. I don't know why OM for movies isn't a thing because I'd love it! I wish there was an OM version for Once Upon a Time in the West. |

Many fans of Ray Harryhausen prefer the open matte version of "Jason and the Argonauts" that was used for the DVD. The Blu-ray release should have offered this format as well and not just the 1.66:1 cropped down version.

I just read that Kill Bill 1 & 2 had an OM version. Not sure why Tarantino decided to split the movie to two parts (marketing perhaps), but oh well.
Also, the Japanese cut of Kill Bill keeps all parts in color than "censor" in black and white. Tarantino is an excellent film maker albeit a tad overrated. |

The Aviator might be. I'm a little bit surprised that one even has a fullscreen edition.
Television airings are opened to 16:9, so I'd imagine the DVD is the opened version cropped on the sides. http://www.framecompare.com/image-co...rison/WLGGNNNX |

And I remembered another one! George Romero's Martin -- this is one case where the full frame unmatted version is the director's preference. I'm almost certain I remember Romero saying in one of the commentaries that unmatted was his preference for this movie. |

Lionheart US DVD is much more open matte than the BR. DVD shows much more vertically with a slight cropping to the sides. See comp 9 in the link below, how high does he have to wear his damn trousers to get them in the shot! The 1.78:1 MVD blu is the more generous of the BR's, but still, the US DVD is the most open matte overall.
