UHD 100 problem = occasional freezing up of triple layer discs.

Dolby Vision option is in the screen settings. Turn it on for discs with Dolby Vision, keep it off for everything else.

Thank you but I’m pretty naive when it comes to definitions forgive my ignorance, so what kinda discs/movies have this triple layer discs, any popular titles have this?

Oh yeah. If you're curious about a title, you can find it in the listing for said movie in the database here. For instance if you look up the TENET 4K listing, it states 1-BD 100 which indicates a triple layer disc. Dual layers are 66.

The triple-layer issue, if it happens (it's only been an issue for me on one disc, that being Man of Steel) can be avoided by disabling internet access (you only really need it for firmware updates so keep it off unless you're doing that). The MAIN thing is, as usual - when playing a disc, push the Options button on the remote and find Picture Quality Mode settings and set this to Direct, only has to be done once and it's locked in.

On the Sony x700 (of which I have had no freezing with Blu-ray discs, and I don't own many 4K discs so I can't comment on those) --

I have not seen a Picture Quality Mode setting that says "Direct"

This setting isn't in the Settings menu, you have to press the Options button on the remote during playback and use the popup menu that appears.

What does the internet have to do with the player having problems switching layers? I've had my internet disabled for a bit now and still had trouble with Ambulance and Jurassic World: Dominion but none at all with Last Night In Soho. It's very much a case by case basis.

It's like the player can't make up its mind. I just watched Citizen Kane in 4K for the first time without it locking up. A film will work one time and then the next lock up. I make sure I clean them with the soft cloth that I use to clean my eye glasses. I guess the X700 is bipolar.

Jaws and the Back To The Future trilogy were my first problem discs. They load fine, well at least the last time I tried, but choke within the first ten minutes. I just went back to the BDs for them and play perfectly on my PS4. Tried several copies, even the neighbor's disc lock up.

It first happened to me with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and I thought it was just a one off but I’ve noticed it just refuses to load more Universal discs, tonight’s example being The Mummy. Works just fine on my PS5 though.

I dunno, some people have said it helps. Personally I have it on all the time, but in general I've had almost none of the issues other people seem to have with this player, possibly because mine is a bit newer than some and they've improved the quality control since the first production run.

How effective is the HDR Conversion feature on this? The default is 3, but I usually set it to two. Just wondering what the general consensus is.

I think it does the job well enough. Certainly, the disc won't look as good as on displays that do have HDR capability, but in my case it's far from unwatchable. Generally, I prefer to set the HDR conversion for SDR displays to 4 or 5 on my player.

I turned every possible function on the player to off, including HDR and Dolby Vision, just to see what would happen. For the first time ever the first Back To The Future UHD played all the way through. Weird.

Since you have a Sony TV, Auto1 the TV does the upscaling for HD, Auto2 the x700 does it. If you had a non-Sony TV, Auto1 and Auto2 are basically the same.

x [4K Upscale Setting]
[Auto1]: Outputs 2K (1920 × 1080) video signals during video playback and 4K video signals during photo/Network Services/ Miracast playback when connecting to a Sony 4K-compatible equipment. Outputs 4K video signals when connecting to a non-Sony 4K-compatible equipment. This setting does not work for 3D video image
playback.
[Auto2]: Automatically outputs 4K video signals when you connect a 4K-compatible equipment.
[Off]: Turns off
