Kinda wish they would just print the whole thing from start-to-finish. They could do it in like 15 omnibus editions. Tokyopop only released the first 23 out of 35 volumes.

Agreed, these are nice but I would much prefer a proper, complete set of collections of the Lupin manga from beginning to end

Mentioned during the Discotek twitch livestream that something new for Lupin is being worked on but no confirmation yet on which title is getting a Blu-ray release.

Finished watching Dead or Alive recently. Haven't seen it in years and my first time in its intended widescreen aspect ratio.

Two minor nitpicks but don't worry no new disc needs to be made IMO.

Maybe just my player but when done watching the movie or any of the features and I'm back at the main menu if I press stop on my remote; it doesn't work. I can only turn off the disc by either playing the movie or extras and then stopping, or power off my player. No big deal just a little unexpected.

Not sure if it's because the animated menu loop is possibly the longest for any Lupin III title on BD so far? Feels like the whole song played but it's great!

Second nitpick is for the English credits Bill Townsley is credited as General Headhunter.

To be fair it was also credited this way for the original Funimation DVD release but it was apparently a credit mistake.

Sounded like Kyle Hebert and using wayback machine Kyle does have this character listed on his resume

https://web.archive.org/web/20070114...ce_credits.php

Again not the end of the world. Discotek has done excellent work confirming credits for past dubs like the various Mamo and Cagliostro dubs that had uncredited roles or pseudonyms.

Unless it’s SD-BD, I’ll be surprised if it’s Part 2.

It appears these collections are also being sold in Japan, so perhaps the original order series is not available to license currently?

Yeah, the first collection was released in Japan as a tribute to Monkey Punch after his passing that same year (2019) while this new second collection was released in October of last year.

Probably an effort to dip their toes in to see if there’s any interest in licensing more Lupin manga.

The Monkey Punch interview included on Discotek's Dead or Alive Blu-ray was a good reminder how different the manga is from the anime.

There are chapters where sometimes only one character appears while the anime almost always has all of them together.

The manga also isn't as family friendly as most modern anime adaptations.

Interested readers might be shocked or disappointed to see the differences.

Selecting specific stories while unpopular to those who prefer chronological storytelling might actually be to the publisher's benefit.

Not everything ages well and is sometimes a product of its time. Underwhelming sales for the first couple releases would prevent future releases.

Something like the Golgo 13 manga or the Guin Saga novels despite having plenty of story to be professionally translated and sold in English have been abandoned

Sounds like this might have been a case of "I will jump into the series from the beginning", correct?

Assuming my assessment was correct, don't worry about watching the series in order. The franchise runs on Negative Continuity, that only the core elements of the story are ever kept.

The only lasting changes ever made to the story (the additions of Jigen and Goemon to the cast) occurred very early on in the franchise's history, during the original manga. Since then, the main cast of characters has not moved forward an inch in over fifty years.

Generally, that is. Part 5 explicitly namechecks the events of Part 4, The Castle of Cagliostro with either Continuity Nods to or cameos from the "Green Jacket" and "Red Jacket" series, the Fuma Conspiracy, and The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. Oh, and Zenigata now has an assistant.

But even at that, the show is pretty compartmentalized and you don't need what came before to enjoy the now.

Nope. Sentai got the license for it before it aired in Japan and put it on their HiDive and later put the Dub for it on Toonami. Discotek had no part in Part VI. Just Sentai and TMS.

I know I don't have to go in order, but I like watching tv series from the beginning to see how they evolved over time. Plus, I prefer the animation of the 70s and 80s compared to what we are getting nowadays as it looks too fake to me. Yes, that might sound weird given that animation is obviously fake, but there's something about digital animation that bothers me compared to old school animation.

It's like movies. I enjoy modern movies, but watching tons of film noirs and classic horror movies that were shot on film has a unique feel to it that you don't get from digitally shot ones. They're too clean in my opinion, if that makes any sense.

Hell, Lupin pretty much seems like an anime version of James Bond where you can pick up any movie and enjoy it, but I prefered watching the movies in order. Even the music evolves with the time period.

I'm not thrilled about this because the coverart isn't even trying to match the other parts at all.

Something Lupin related will be announced at Anime NYC. Most likely a new animated project.
