In a franchise that is 50+ years on now, you have art styles that are all over the map. The 3D of The First, the gritty look from the A Woman Called Fujiko series, the softer Miyazaki style, the lanky look that's closer to the original Monkey Punch manga and all points inbetween - I have no issue with this. But this Cats Eye style? Do not want!

That's probably because High Dive have it, and High Dive is where stuff goes to die.
It also looks god awful from a visual perspective, and that's coming from someone who didn't mind how Megalobox looked.

I've actually been watching more series on HiDive than on Crunchyroll, for both the Summer and the Fall 2022 seasons.

Isn't it the video encoding quality that is really bad? To me it look very low res like standard def and upscaled with poor edge enhancement. Either way it looks awful.

Since it looks like Hidive is within a week of posting the last Lupin Zero episode, I decided to re-sub and check the show out. Being that it's just a six part OVA, I'm going to space them out one a day, just to get maximum value out of the month.

My quick assessment? I liked it. It felt very Lupin, with all the manerisms we've come to expect. They almost did the Spotlight Run, Lupin did the finger "who me thing", and there were moments where they were clearly echoing Older Lupin. I loved how the opening really felt like an old Lupin opening.

The music is very on point and very "sixties", the dynamic of a young Lupin and young Jigen just getting to know each other is there, and the story was fun if a bit simple. Overall it felt like a modern take on the Green Jacket series. I'd like to see where they go with this for sure.

EPISODE TWO THOUGHTS
I wound up putting on episode two of Lupin Zero tonight. I enjoyed it. It was a nice simple story about

[Show spoiler]a necklace that Jigen has to guard, and Lupin has to steal. There's a priestess be a foil for Lupin and Jigen, and some goofy bad guys to try and stop Lupin.

No, the story doesn't really move the needle, but it was a nice bonding episode for our two. And Jigen has a couple of moments where I legitimately laughed.

We know where they wind up, and this franchise operates on Negative continuity anyway, so Lupin Zero is just as cannon as anything other origin story in the series. Beyond these 6 parts, it'll have no bearing - but it's still a charming little story regardless.

I'll probably winding up watching the third episode tonight too, because

EPISODE THREE THOUGHTS
Hmmm, I'm torn on this episode.

The story is that

[Show spoiler]Lupin the First, the original Arsene Lupin has summoned our young Lupin along with four other master thieves to compete for his treasure and his legacy. One has the key to the Vault, one has bandages, one has a knife, one has a gun. Its a matter of figureing out who has the key, get it from them or work out an alliance. and get the treasure and the legacy. Since we all know that Lupin is officially the third, he gets the claim to the legacy - but how it gets there is the fun.

It turns out that Arsene Lupin is a dirty old man. Lupin III's labido does not fall far from the tree. The first time we see Arsene, he's in bed surrounded by naked women, while he talks to III, he's fondling titties. He's super misogynistic, and 100% on brand for the sixties. Lupin the II is kind of a wuss and secret shame of the family. . . until it turns out he's as good as either of the two.

I was annoyed by the state of affairs until Arsene redeemed himself and II turned out to be Sauve

So I didn't hate the episode, I'm not sure I liked it either. If it were a 26 episode season, I'd be okay with it, but seeing as this was 1/6th of the season, I'm a little less forgiving.
