Anime Movies Playing in US Theaters

• listing upcoming anime movies or live action movies based on anime with their showing dates and whether they are dub/sub viewings

• discussing our reviews of said movies after we go see them (since most of the time they are new to the US)

• sharing which anime movies we have gone to see in the current year

• our plans to purchase or if we have purchased physical releases of anime movies we have seen in theaters based on our theater experience.

Good thread topic. Just saw Mirai last night and I enjoyed it. I thought the family aspect was a bit stronger compared to Summer Wars though the MC is a toddler and screams and throws tantrums like one which can definitely put someone off easily.

Liz and the Blue Bird was great and standalone from Euphonium. The cinematography is what sold me on the movie and I will definitely pick this up on BD later.

Maquia is my favorite movie of the year so far. It was nice having another fantasy movie more similar to an older Ghibli movie and I can't wait for the US Collector's Edition next year.

Going to see Pokemon tomorrow and will probably see Pancreas next year.

Thank you, I was surprised that there was not already a thread like this considering there have been more and more anime and anime live action movies shown in theaters over the years. The first one I ever went to was the Psycho-Pass movie back in 2016 and I have not stopped since.

I actually saw Mirai last night as well. I have not seen Summer Wars so I cannot make any comparisons, but the animation was great and the family theme was nice and simple, but the boy crying all the time really did annoy me after a while. But there were a ton of funny moments and I will definitely be buying a BD/DVD combo once it comes out (or sell it if it comes with a digital copy, who knows).

So far next year, I will hopefully be going to see the dubs of Modest Heroes, A Silent Voice, and I Want To Eat Your Pancreas.

Hoping we get a theatrical release in the states for Gundam Narrative, which just came out in theaters in Japan. Sunrise is doing a dub for it, so for an initial release, it's either that or just drop it online for streaming.

Would love to get the chance to see Gundam in a theater for the first time.

Funimation began streaming an English-subtitled trailer on Saturday for the Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection (Code Geass: Fukkatsu no Lelouch) sequel anime film. The video reveals that Funimation will screen the film in North American theaters in 2019. The below video is region free, and is an English-subtitled version of a video Bandai streamed earlier on Saturday.

The film's new characters and cast members include:

Ayumu Murase as Shario
Nobunaga Shimazaki as Shesutaaru
Wataru Takagi as Bituru
Keiko Toda as Shamuna
Akio Ohtsuka as Fōgunaa
Kenjiro Tsuda as Kujapatto

Leo Ieiri is performing the opening theme song "Kono Sekai de" (In This World), and Unione is performing the ending theme song "Revive." In addition, Ali Project is performing the insert song "Utsukushiki Kemonotachi no Tame no" (For the Beautiful Creatures).

The story begins in the world two years after Zero Requiem.

Director Goro Taniguchi confirmed that many of the key staff members are returning for the movie, and specifically emphasized that the story will be complete in one film, which will serve as a finale. The film will open on February 9 in 120 theaters in Japan, including Shinjuku Wald 9 in Tokyo.

The first film in the series' compilation recap trilogy, Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch - Kōdō (lit.: The Awakening Path, official English subtitle: Initiation), opened in Japan in October 2017. The second film, Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch - Handō (lit.: The Rebellion Path, official English subtitle: Transgression), opened in Japan in February. The third film, Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch - Ōdō (lit.: The Imperial Path, official English subtitle: Glorification), opened in May. Funimation has licensed the trilogy.

The original Code Geass television series premiered in 2006, followed by a sequel series in 2008. The series has inspired various manga and original video anime, including the Code Geass: Akito the Exiled spinoff, which premiered in 2012.

Not sure if it's a new development or I just wasn't aware of it before (probably the latter) but there was a surprisingly decent number of anime films playing near me this year. Managed to see Perfect Blue, Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door, Mirai, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky this year. Wish I had seen Night is Short, Walk On Girl, but missed that one.

Had seem them all before, but it was fun to revisit them all on the big screen. Mononoke was especially epic in a theater.

I'm not holding my breath. Honestly, I barely remember any anime being widely played near me since like Pokemon 3.

Sentai Filmworks began streaming two English-subtitled preview videos for the Made in Abyss compilation films on Wednesday. Sentai Filmworks will screen both films in theaters in the United States in 2019.

The first Made in Abyss film, Made in Abyss: Tabidachi no Yoake (Journey's Dawn), will open in Japan on January 4, followed by the second film, Made in Abyss: Hōrō Suru Tasogare (Wandering Twilight), on January 18.

The first 13-episode television anime series based on Akihito Tsukushi's manga premiered in Japan in July 2017. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series and released it on Blu-ray Disc on October 23. The English-subtitled version of the show streamed in the United States on Amazon's Anime Strike service, and HIDIVE streamed the series outside of the United States. The dub is also streaming on HIDIVE.

Production of a sequel is underway.

In the story, an enormous pit and cave system called the "Abyss" is the only unexplored place in the world. Strange and wonderful creatures reside in its depths, and it is full of precious relics that current humans are unable to make. The mysteries of the Abyss fascinate humans, and they head down to explore. The adventurers who venture into pit are known as "Cave Raiders." A little orphan girl named Rico lives in the town of Ōsu on the edge of the Abyss. Her dream is to become a Cave Raider like her mother and solve the mysteries of the cave system. One day, Rico starts exploring the caves and discovers a robot who resembles a human boy.

The anime is based on Akihito Tsukushi's manga of the same name. Seven Seas Entertainment is releasing the manga in English. Takeshobo published the manga's seventh volume in Japan on July 27.

It was alright but in my opinion not worth the $14+ ticket to see it. The animation of all three stories was great, but that is about all that I will give it. The stories themselves were pretty bland, and the main advertised story did not even have any dialogue besides the characters saying each other’s names. After how awesome Mary and the Witch’s Flower was, I expected so much better from Studio Ponoc, even for short films. Overall, I was incredibly underwhelmed and disappointed by these short films, and I almost never feel that way about anything I watch, whether anime or Hollywood. I would say the interview at the end with the head director was the most interesting and insightful part of this particular theater experience since he mentioned that all three stories are tied to the theme of “Life” and what it means in different scenarios. It also made me appreciate the meaning behind each story more, but did not make me like them any better. I will say that each individual story could have been better if it was longer. Not necessarily a feature-length film or series, but maybe 45-60 minutes each. These stories needed more depth and explanation to reach their full potential. If it comes with a UV copy in English I may buy the physical release and re-sell it, but it is not one that I would want to take up physical space on my shelves or in my storage unit.

I passed on that one myself figuring I would rather just pick it up whenever it was on BD. Anthology films are nice and all but none of the ones I saw really wowed me.

Going to see Gundam NT for sure and I want to see Pancreas but none of my friends want to see it lol

I really enjoyed Modest Heroes. The stories were nice, and geared more towards younger children, and the different animation styles were all beautiful. I quite enjoyed the middle one about a boy with an egg allegy, which is perhaps a strange subject matter for a film, but works nicely as an animated short. The shorts aren't amazing, or groundbreaking, but none of them were bad.

The shorts themselves weren't that long, but apparently there was supposed to be a fourth from Isao Takahata before he passed. There was a pretty extensive featurette at the end with the head of Studio Ponoc, Yoshiaki Nishimura, which was excellent. He really discussed everything about the process, the directors, the reason why short films are important, even if they're not profitable. It really made me glad I added my support to them. Also learning more about the shorts themselves made me appreciate them more. I hope they do continue with future volumes as intended.

Tickets were $10 for it here btw.

I'll most likely go see "I want to Eat Your Pancreas" in the local theater with my next-door anime fan neighbors. the movie is playing only 5 miles away from home this time, closest Fathom Event yet to my location.
