But really, I appreciate each of these labels. Can we knock this kind of silly stuff off already? |

I'm leaning toward not buying and then hating myself for it when it goes OOP. Or maybe I'll eventually pick it up in a sale. I've seen her two most acclaimed early films and they didn't do a lot for me personally. I'm willing to revisit, but only at the right price tag. That said, I appreciate that this exists all the same.

I think this set is intended more for established fans of her work and of pre-code cinema in general. Most everyone on this forum is very well-versed in what they already like, so if they aren’t familiar with Mae West yet there’s probably a reason and this set wouldn’t be worth it for them, and that’s fine. Even die-hard Mae West fans admit that She Done Him Wrong and I’m No Angel are the only two movies in her filmography that were actually important not only in her own career but in the history of Hollywood and of censorship in America. Almost everything after those two was a regression (and it wasn’t her fault).

I would say that any fan of movies from the Golden Age has the potential to enjoy these movies. |

I am surprised at this luke-warm reception of this box set. Mae West - love her or hate her - is a Hollywood icon who helped shape the production code. I have the 5 film DVD set from the US and enjoyed all of them. Also, in the US, Kino thought there is enough interest in NINE of these films (even the 'weaker' ones) to release them individually. If they didn't think those would turn a profit by themselves, they would have done a boxset. Their business model is only box releases that they don't think will sell strongly by themselves. Net: there seems to be interest in these films by enough people in US/UK to justify this set. I can't wait for this to be released.

In many cases I suspect that reason is lack of exposure - there was a UK DVD set, but I can only recall one of her movies ever playing on UK TV, and that possibly programmed more as a W.C. Fields film (and UK screenings of his movies are pretty much a once in a decade event). I suspect in the past they were either considered too risque (pre-Code) or too poor (post-code) for the usual weekend matinee or late night slots vintage movies got and today they're just too 'old.'
