Default Trying to figure out hookups?

I really confused, & sorry if this has been asked a million times, but I'm old school and totally new to these new A/V hookups.

I'm trying to figure out how to hook up a new Samsung BD-P2500 Bluray player and a new Samsung PN50A650 Plasma TV to an older Onkyo HT-R520 home theater reciever.

I was going to go Reciever using digital optical in to Bluray digital optical out then Bluray HDMI out to TV HDMI in. Will this work? Is there any other cable I need? What would be the best way of doing this setup?

I've been reading and searching this all day, & it just keeps getting more confusing & frustrating the more I read. So I thought I would ask here.
Eventually I will get a new HDMI reciever, but for now I have to use what I have

Please help cause im lost.

optical out from bluray player to receiver.
hdmi out from bluray player to tv.

aside from setting your devices up appropriately in their respective menus, this should be fine.

Will this give me 5.1 surround with Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-HD while watching TV and/or playing Bluray?

been reading where I may need analog cables to use 5.1?

You'll get 5.1 over optical and it will sound mighty fine. But, it won't be lossless. The new HD codecs require an HDMI connection or multichannel analog cables for receivers that don't have HDMI.

Optical is limited to legacy DD 5.1 and DTS. But, the legacy formats are less compressed on BD than DVD. So, you'll get much, if not all, of the benefit of TrueHD and dts-MA when using optical.

That is how I had mine connected before I upgraded my receiver last week and I have the same BDP and a Samsung LCD TV. It will work fine, but you will want to get a new receiver to get the latests HD audio. There's a guy in the trading forums selling a Denon AVR-2309ci that will decode all the current HD audio codecs. There's another guy selling an Onkyo 605 too. I don't know if that decodes the HD audio or not.

BTW, with the f/w ver 2.4 upgrade the player will decode dts HD MA and it has analog outs. If the Onkyo has analog inputs it will play it.

Great, I did upgrade to f/w 2.4 & my onkyo 520 has analog inputs, so does this mean it would be better to go this route rather than a Digital Optical cable? or maybe both?

If that's true than you can connect this player to the Onkyo's 5.1 analog inputs and get all your hd audio. This should give you a better surround sound experience than the optical cable.

No problem.

The receiver also has HDMI, so you can use that for switching to the HDTV too.
