We all say DVD instead of Digital Versatile Disc. How long until we start to call Blu-ray Disc either BRD or BD? I know some of us type/write it as BD for short, but does anybody refer to it as BRD or BD?

o yeah, and we should all be thankful that we don't have to say HD-DVD for the next several decades

We will never say BD. The only reason we say DVD is because its shorter (3 sylables) than Digital Versitile Disc (8, I believe). Blu-ray and BD are both only two sylables, it is not shorter to say BD than Blu-ray and blu-ray sounds better.

though i must point out that saying just Blu-ray would lead to the acronym BR not BD. So it is easier to say BD than Blu-ray Disc.

i type BD but i say blu ray disc. i have to add the disc part because i hate hearing people saying bluray DVD. its just one of those things that just kills me to hear. so its kind of a thing to try to educate the public. in a few years when people stop calling them bluray dvds ill be used to saying blu ray disc.

The insiders said BD came first. Then it took two years to figure out what BD should mean. I say BD, occasionally Blu-ray but never BRD.

We used to ask, "do you have that movie on DVD?"
Now we ask, "do you have that movie on blu-ray?" I think people will always just say blu-ray. |

For some reason "BRD" seems to be very popular on AVS. You can tell we're getting some AVS exiles lately, because "BRD" is popping up here more and more lately.
Anyway, "BRD" is flat-out wrong as "BD" is the official shortened version of the name. The only way I could see going with something other than what the BDA wants it to be called is if "BD" already referred to something in this realm and thus could be a source of confusion. Since I haven't heard of any other "BD" in the AV world, I don't see any reason to overrule what the BDA wants. "BRD" is just people making up their own acronym or people with a subconscious need for a TLA (three-letter acronym). |

May be when the name Blu-ray itself becomes mainstream. Even then I think Blu-ray sounds cooler.
