Anyway, I agree with a previous poster and don't think we'll ever say BD, but people are lazy when typing, and when I shorten, I shorten to Blu. I think Blu sounds cooler and is more recognizable than BD |

Can't really fault these people. (don't get me wrong I hate hearing blu-ray dvd), but most people are used to DVD and lots of people think that DVD stands for digital video disc...so while sounding dumb, it technically is a blu-ray digital video disc.
I only ever refer to them as Blu-rays. I must point out that saying Blu-ray would actually just lead to the acronym of B, consider the fact that Blu-ray is one word. |

People I know still consider Blu-ray a form of DVD... So using BD as a replacement for DVD is going to be tough...
"Hey, you wanna go shopping for BDs tonight" - Doesn't work for me...and many of my friends would ask me what I meant, forcing me to define BD, taking up even more time than if I just used the word itself... "Hey, you wanna go shopping for DVDs tonight? There's a new Blu-ray release I'd like to check out" - Works for me, and is very clear with no need for any extra explanation...Unless people don't know what Blu-ray is...and in that case, BD would even be worse... Like someone else on this thread has mentioned, I am not likely to use BD when speaking, but may use it is a short way to reference it in typing... Last edited by MikeekiM; 02-25-2008 at 04:00 PM. |

How about this.
We say: "Im just going out to get a DVD" or "Im just going out to get a Video" Will we say: "Im just going out to get a Blu-ray" "Im just going out to get a Blu-ray disc" "Im just going out to get a Blu-ray movie" "Im just going out to get a BRD" ?? |

We just killed the tongue-tying "HD-DVD". Don't go out now and start saying "HD-BRD".

Also, Blu-ray advertising hasn't used "BD" one iota, so nobody's going to know what you mean when you ask, "Where are your BDs?" I think "Blu-ray" has already become the de facto standard. |

Ahh, something else to think about: Once recordable media falls out of the rape-and-pillage price range and becomes commonplace, I'm sure we'll be talking about "BD-R's" and "BD-RE's". "Blu-ray recordable" is clunky, and "Blu-ray-R" doesn't roll off the tongue, either.
We can thank the BDA for having the foresight not to saddle us with the abbreviations "BRD-R" and "BRD-RE". ![]() |

BD for sure. That's why they're called BD-ROMs and not BRD-ROMs.
