I'm talking about DVD encoding, where I think you're talking about filming. Last edited by BStecke; 04-28-2008 at 11:09 PM. |

My favorite thing about that video is that right after watching this director tear a new one into people for changing the aspect ratios of the original content, some clown has the gall to make this comment:

![]() He compared 2.35 to 1.33 ... not 1.85. There would be much less loss of space in 1.85, and the filmakers would certailly have enough space to work with. Why should we need to buy a TV 2 sizes larger to get a decect size picture? ![]() |

Next you'll tell all photographers to take all their photos in portrait vs landscape because you prefer your frames that way. Or tell all painters to use the same size canvas or only use certain palettes or mediums because that will look better in your home. Don't pidgeon-hole art for your convenience. Art needs to be expressed how the artist invisions it. And you'd have to pan and scan a 2.35:1 image to get it to 1.85:1. The sides get cut off just the same as making a 1.85:1 image fit in a 4:3 window. |

Mr. Pollock was talking about is when you see a movie that's been paned and scanned you are not seeing the film as the filmmaker originally wanted or presented as they saw in their vision of the movie. Who are we to tell an artist, be it in filmmaking, music or what have you how to best present their work? I myself agree with Mr. Pollock, I want the movie presented in whatever format he or she originally intended. If that means 1.78:1, 2.40:1, or 4:3 so be it. If I have to have black bars on the top and bottom, on the sides, or non at all, if it's preserving the film as it was intended by the filmmaker then HELL YES I want it that way!!!!! ![]() |

The simplest way to fix the black bar problem is to make TVs much, much wider and much, much shorter. My goodness! What hasn't anyone thought about doing this before???

This black bar debate is borderline insanity. Those who cant deal with watching a movie in OAR deserve no visual media..... and a punch in the face.
