i cant seem to post anywere.
by the sound of ur thread i thought u would know aswer to my quest,....
my son is 9 he has a psp and a ps3 he has had them both for about a month and now wonts a blu ray film,. can he put the blu ray disc in his psp or does he have to play it in his ps3??
i do feel silly not knowin

Bluray can't play on psp it can only play on PS3.

HOWEVER, some blu-ray movies come with Digital Copy, which can in most situations be put on the PSP. In fact, some of them are tailored for it. Just need to be able to save the file to the PSP either through flash memory or possibly through the PS3 itself- since I don't have a PSP I'm not sure. However, it is an option.

Yes, he will likely have to play it in the PS3, but a digital copy can be played on the PSP, but it's not going to be High-Definition etc.... (he's 9 though, he'll get over it!)

Then you'll know that you're getting the best video you can from it.......

Not sure what movies 9 year olds like, or I'd recommend some, but my kids are much younger..... Perhaps "Sky-High" is a good one for 9 year olds, but either way, I'm sure he knows what he wants!

I've posted this elsewhere but couldn't find a reply, if any. That's why I am trying you. You seem to have a big brain.

I recently bought the Magnavox NB500MG1F at WalMart. I was reading different strings and saw generally that this WalMart special was a decent machine. I have yet to believe it. It claims to up convert standard DVDs to 1080p resolution by HDMI which was a reason I bought it. So far I have only been able to play the Star Wars: Attack of the Clones standard DVD. And it took at least 10 minutes to start playing. Nothing else plays.

Today I bought Dragon Wars in blu ray. It too does not play. Am I missing anything? I have an HDMI cable. The connections must be good because I was able to play the one video. Help!

can you give a bit more info?

you said it takes 10 minutes for Star Wars to start playing, what do you see on the screen for these 10 minutes? Black, loading bar, etc.

Also, you said some movies just don't play... exactly what happens when you put these movies in?

No problem. I could use any help I can.

For Star Wars and for all of the discs I've tried, including the blu ray one, all I had was a blank screen. There must have been some sort of activity occurring like loading and playing, because the movie started where the decoy Queen Amidala arrives, then is killed. As I write this, the blu ray disc I just purchased has been in the player for almost 2 hours with a blank screen. The grrn play light has been on this while time. This includes the blue disc in light.

I'm new to blu ray, so I don't know anything about bars, etc.

Hey lenrap - have you tried updating the player to the latest firmware? Give that a shot if you haven't already and report back .

I've been skimming through it to try and find sites for firmware updates, the only thing I've seen is FUNAI's site but they don't have firmware for your player online. I'm continuing to look.

Some members of the forum don't seem to be having issues with that player, but some do. Yours could be faulty or maybe it needs an update or maybe something else. Hopefully they will be able to assist you and go from there . Sorry I couldn't be of any more direct help...of course you're able to return it to the store, but if you like the player and the price you paid, might be worth giving Magnavox a shout first to see if they solve the problem.

and picked up our first BD disc suggested by everyone - Dark Knight -

Ok - it's not a full aspect screen....
as has been discussed in various threads.

I'm confused, disappointed, and confused again

I thought the whole idea of moving to 16:9 HDTV
was to mimic the screen size of movies ?
Now, after reading some educational threads here,
it appears that the 16:9 is not the holy grail for screen ratios. WHY ?

So, we now have these TV screen images:
old 4:3 and the new 16:9 - and whatever IMAX is showing,
and yet - we still don't have an identical match
for the disc movies we purchase to fill our HDTV screens ?

4:3 = 1.34
16:9 = 1.78

Different aspect ratios give a completely different 'feel' to the film.... that's why directors choose to shoot in different aspect ratios..... and it's not as simple as "Director XYZ likes 1.85:1, while Director ABC likes 1.78:1" etc....

Look at "Che" for example.... it's in essence one movie, broken into two different parts..... the director used a different aspect ratio for each part to help convey the feel of the environment/jungle/city/etc.

Just embrace the black bars..... Films aren't projected in the same aspect ratio at the theaters, so you'll never be able to get a one-size-fits-all, and really, you wouldn't want one.

And pardon me, but I'm kind of unsure what to put for my search terms. I can be dim that way sometimes. Hahaha.

I own a lot of old DVDs, stuff that was made before HDTVs existed (At least for the common public). My TV is a Sony Bravia something-or-other and my BD Player is a PS3.

Now, some of you might think I'm being nitpicky, but I'd really like to replace my old DVDs to free up some shelf space, since blu-ray cases are a little slimmer. The question is, when you have oh-so-many blu-rays, does it still make a difference? I'm not good at math, but wouldn't it make a difference in storage as well?

I'd also like to be rid of the aspect ratio problems, because on my TV I see black bars on the sides.

Have you ever watched a blu-ray and found it distracting how good it looks?

I'm not trying to bash blu-ray or anything, and I think that 85% of the time, blu-ray/HD is great. But I recently watched Back to the Future, and the complete Star Wars saga on blu-ray. A lot of the time, I was thinking "Wow, this looks great!". But some of the time, it was actually distracting. In Back to the Future, I could see how obvious the old make up effects were. Even in the newer Star Wars films, I could easily tell when the actors were filmed against the blue screen, even though I never noticed it in theaters or on DVD. At some points it even became distracting.

So obviously some movies were never INTENDED to be watched in HD. What do you guys think of this? Do you ever have this problem? Again, I am NOT anti-bluray or anything, but I would just like to hear other perspectives. Thanks!
