The way the Super Bowl coverage rights move between different broadcasters has made the AV quality of the live Big Game feed each year something of a lottery. This year, though, Fox, the broadcaster of Super Bowl LVII, is pulling out all the stops to deliver the sort of premium viewing experience the US’s biggest annual sporting event deserves by making it available live for the first time ever in Dolby Vision HDR.

According to Dolby, Dolby Vision improves over regular high dynamic range broadcasting by enabling workflows to adapt to all HDR formats and resolutions, reducing the complexity of setup to deliver a higher quality experience at minimal cost, and providing an enhanced eco system from content generation to TV playback that better preserves creative intent.
Comcast x Dolby Vision

Or, to put this more prosaically as Dolby does in its announcement of the Super Bowl LVII coverage: “When experienced in Dolby Vision, football fans will feel as if they’ve been transported to State Farm Stadium as they watch every heart stopping, nail-biting moment of the Kansas City Chiefs vs Philadelphia Eagles game with lifelike colours, sharp contrast, and rich details.”

Fox will also be delivering the live Super Bowl LVII in 4K resolution, which provides images with four times as many pixels as you get with the HD technology most Super Bowls have been broadcast in over the past decade or so.

Even though we in the UK where I live have long being used to being able to watch premium sports events (and, increasingly, some not so premium sports events, too!) in 4K and HDR, no UK broadcaster has yet managed to deliver a live 4K event in Dolby Vision. So hopefully Fox’s efforts will pave the way to a wholesale improvement in the delivery of ‘tent-pole’ events on both sides of the pond.

If you’re as much an AV fan as you are a sports fan and you’re now chomping at the bit to get your eyes on Fox’s Feb 13 Super Bowl LVII broadcast, you need to know that the Dolby Vision/4K news comes with pretty significant strings attached when it comes to the equipment you’ll need to own in order to experience the feed in all its premium AV glory.

For starters, you’ll need to be a subscriber to Comcast’s Xfinity cable TV service, and you’ll need to be receiving that service using one of Xfinity’s X1 set top boxes. This box will then have to be connected to a TV that’s capable of playing the Dolby Vision HDR format. Many do these days, but it’s certainly not a universal TV feature. No Samsung TVs, in particular, are equipped with Dolby Vision support.

If you don’t have a Dolby Vision-capable TV but are up for buying one before February 13, Dolby has established a ‘store’ on Amazon that carries a curated collection of Dolby Vision-enabled TVs from TCL, Hisense, Sony and LG - many of which are available at discount prices. You can access this Dolby Vision store by following this link.

If you’ve managed to get all the necessary kit together in time, though, and you want to enjoy the Big Game in all its 4K Dolby Vision HDR glory, apparently all you’ll need to do is say ‘4K’ into your X1 box’s voice remote when the time comes and the best quality feed will start to play.
Got excited for this until i read only on Comcast/Xfinity... i guess no DV for me, faux 4k HDR it is then... now i will wait to see if someone will rip the DV feed and release it in the wild so i have a chance to see it afterwards.

these guys still get training, coaching, they don't just jump right in. Like others have said, he may take a year off before jumping in the booth but even if he doesn't there's seven months until the regular season starts.

I don't love Buck but by any means but I've never gotten the hate. He does his job and he's good at it

Brady also lost alot of $$ even for him on the FTX scandal so that $37.5m/yr from fox looks kinda nice.
of all of those mentioned Collinsworth can go

I saw that too. Weird. I haven't paid too much attention to the noise but I mean I guess he "fell off" compared to when he first hit the booth, when everyone was initially fawning over him.

It’s crazy to see how competitive the broadcasting role has become.

You know, when Romo was announced to the broadcast booth, you had a lot of veteran announcers decrying the contract, especially since Romo wouldn't be working his way up through the system as they had.

If someone deems Olsen valuable enough, then they will replace who they have to. It wouldn't be the first time.

On that note, while Herbstreit is fine, I don't think he's at all entrenched.

I'll go even further, and this time delve into some sacrilege: Al Michaels has seen better days, too.

That's the kind of nonsense I'm talking about. If I'm Brady, I'm just avoiding the mess altogether.
Sure CBS could fire Romo today but then they'd still have to pay him alot of his contract that's still left + pay Olsen - not a good business move.

Who here thinks Romo is a good color commentator? I don't mind him, but this past Monday Two Pros & a Cup of Joe radio show was ripping Romo after the Chiefs/Bengals game. It was mainly Levar Arrington and Brady Quinn making fun of Romo, they played some clips from the game and were pretty much laughing at Romo and how he spoke.

Not sure why you're fixated on Romo as an immediate option to be replaced, but I agree that it would probably not be a good business move.

Just used Romo as example would be same situation with Collinsworth or Herbs.
NBC just recently gave Chris a big extension.
+ why would Olsen want to go to TNF that's a big step down.

As was mentioned CBS felt need to do that intervention + articles like this:

https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/tony-...g-fan-reaction

Also fox will be debuting a new scorebox during the SB.

If you wanna get in on the fanduel gronkowski FG promo all you need to do is bet $5.
So if you wanna play it real safe you can bet "opening ko returned for a TD ?"
Bet $5 on NO -50,000.
You get back $5.01 when you win so you only net $0.01 but it gets you in the promo.
I think the promo max you can win is $20.

Why anyone who would want to waste a few hours of their life watching a Pro Bowl flag football game is beyond me. Give me a good college basketball game instead. These other silly contests that they are doing, grown men playing childrens games. Catch the water balloon and dodge ball. If they aren't going to play tackle football, then don't do a pro bowl. Just give each player a dinner for two certificate to Perkins or Kentucky Fried Chicken and be done with it.

Thought it was more fun than what they have been doing with the Pro Bowl.

Same here. This is the first time I've enjoyed Pro Bowl weekend in a long time. I liked most of the skills competitions and flag football was much better than the normal game they have always played. All the guys were out there having fun and showing off their personalities and I loved that they were mic'd up for it. It was funny seeing how serious Peyton got there at the end. He really didn't want to lose to his brother.

Brady Quinn of all people has no reason to be laughing at anyone.

What the hell was Carr doing at the pro-bowl? The guy was benched and shelved by his team and goes to the pro-bowl?

And the game was just dumb, it's all fun and good until your team's best player wrecks a knee doing this stupid crap! I guess not enough people remember Robert Edwards having his career ruined because of a dumb beach flag game and was why they stopped this stuff for so many years.

IIRC, that injury happened on PB weekend, but had nothing to do with anything to do with the actual PB festivities.

Why wouldn't Carr go to the Pro Bowl? He was benched because the Raiders planned to move on from him in the offseason and didn't want to risk injury and have $40m tied to him over the next two seasons even if they traded or released him.
Raiders finding new and crazy ways to lose this past season fell on McDaniels continually proving to be an awful head coach.

Madden sim picked Eagles over Chiefs 31-17 but in fairness, it has not proven to have a good pick record.
