Default "I Want to Gain Weight!"

I figured since we had an official "Lose Weight" thread - we could also have the opposite.

Often looked aside in the plight of the large person losing weight, is the difficulty that us ectomorphs (skinny people) have in gaining weight.

So last summer, I finally got tired of it, and decided to do everything within my power to start putting muscle on my frame.

As of last August, 2009 - I weighed 151 lbs. I am 6'2". Now as you can imagine, that is incredibly svelte - borderline Ethiopian. I began to hit the gym 5 out of 7 days a week for around 2 hours and change my diet around to a variety of protein-rich, fiber-rich, low-fat foods. Seafood, chicken, rice, whole-wheat stuff. Crazy vegetables and fruits. I eat no fast food or carbonated beverages. But my hyper-quick metabolism meant I had to eat at a horse's pace to keep any weight on. If I were to stop eating or working out for a bit, I would lose 2-3 pounds instantly.

Now I am 173 lbs, and actually have decent strength. But alas, I still look thin. Given my 6'2" frame, I could easily pack another 20-30 pounds. Just to look solidly built.

I found that including L-Arginine and L-Glutamine supplements greatly increased my strength-building. I maximize weight and limit reps to build muscle, and vary my exercises every few weeks to prevent muscle memory. I also started drinking Muscle Milk as a little boost.

So, the purpose of this thread - any tips and tricks that you used to gain muscle weight? Workout suggestions? Supplement ideas? So on? Are you on a muscle-gaining program yourself? Share your stories!

A high-quality micellar casein protein will work wonders for packing on mass, if timed properly and you are working out. Go with the expensive Optimum Nutrition brand, it tastes great.

I was skinny as hell in 2005. I gained weight the wrong way by drinking almost every single night! Seriously, it was bad a habit due to my previous relationship .
I did drink a weight gainer protein shake that was chocolate flavored which I mixed with milk at that time also.

1) Try 6 meals a day...high in protein.
2) If you can't make it to the gym, improvise at home....200 push-ups and 200 crunches a day.
3) Up your carb intake daily....pasta's work well.
4) Drink a protein drink before bed at least 5 times a week.

There's more, but for now, that should get you started

Listen to Fighter This is basically what I've done for years. If your hitting the gym for 2 hours, make sure most of that time is weights. Use cardio to warm up for a mile or so.

Please read this before you start doing 200 crunches a day. Crunches can do more harm than good and there's better exercises to work on your core.

My outlook on weight gain has always been to eat, eat, and eat more!

Try to find out how many calories you would need to eat a day to maintain your current weight, then tack on another 500 onto it (or more for faster growth).

Also, try to eat around 1.2 grams of protein X your body weight.

I do eat and eat and eat - but only 3 big meals a day, I think that's my problem. I should eat 6 medium-sized meals instead, like Fighter suggested.

And, I do - I eat anywhere from 190-240g of protein a day, depending on my meals.

Try Weight Gainer....works extremely well...you won't get fat, but will gain lean muscle!! At least 3 servings a day

L-Glutamine is excellent for your muscles, both in building them larger and in alleviating fatigue and soreness. I also recommend eating nuts, specifically walnuts high in omega 3 and almonds as well. Almonds before a workout are a good boost, surprisingly enough. Also, you definitely want to have 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, so try to pack in around 170-180 grams a day. I'm 6'5 and 270 right now and I've usually taken in around 130 grams by 7-8 AM after I finish my workout. Only...140 grams left!
