So who here is dieting, working out, undergoing a change of lifestyle, etc.?!
Who here is thinking about it? Got stories to share? Share here. ![]() Been hitting the gym for little over a month now (5 days a week) since I quit 6 months ago. Dropped 5 lbs. so far. My routine is usually 30 minutes of cardio followed by light resistance training and some basketball.. but it varies a lot as I usually change it up to keep me entertained. Eating right is the thing that gets me, I've cheated every weekend so far. Do'h! I'm 6' and 245 lbs. Trying to get to 200-220 before Summer. ![]() |

I play hoops about two or three times per week (classic pics here). I normally play on about six or so softball leagues throughout the course of the year as well, but this year I will play in only a couple so I can let my arm heal. I kind of stressed my biceps tendon (elbow) by overdoing it for the past few years. Last year I really had some arm issues. As such, I have not lifted weights for about six weeks while I am currently in physical therapy for the tendonosis I developed in said elbow. Normally I'm good for about four or five days of lifting, seven days of cardio, and ancillary sports activities in the course of any given week. It gets CRAZY in the summer. Needless to say, I consume a considerably amount of calories. My diet is generally pretty good, but we all go through peaks and valleys -- even those who say they eat perfectly. My best approach so far in my life (about 12 years' worth of the training style that I mentioned above. I'm 30 now and started when I was 18), is to eat as well as you can during the week, and cut yourself some slack on the weekends. Just be careful about weekends, because if you count Friday night's dinner, Saturday, and Sunday as "weekend" time, then you're talking about three days out of seven in a week. That won't really fly. I'm about 6'0"/6'1" and go about 175 depending on the season. I'll be as light as about 170 and about as heavy as 178 or so. I don't really drink, but I'll have some alcohol for "events" like the Super Bowl, 4th of July, and perhaps Christmas. Throw in a couple other times of alcohol consumption throughout the year for a random celebration or two and it probably totals once every other month that the substance enters my body. My dad had some serious issues with alcoholism, addiction, and weight control, and I'm doing my best to fight those demons. I've got the alcohol and weight thing licked, but I know my addictive tendencies and need to be careful. My two cents! Good luck with your battle to drop the pounds! Only a couple months until summer... |

I've been walking and instead of soda I drink green tea. For me that's easy though, never been a soda lover.
Also trying not to drink... which is easy enough when you can't get alcohol legally. America *sigh*. Last edited by assydingo; 03-24-2009 at 04:54 PM. |

Unfortunately alcohol affects your body's ability to metabolize sugars..... so hard liquor is likely to cause you to put on weight even faster.
I still drink a can of soda a day or so....... which is TERRIBLE... I use to never touch the stuff, and it was strictly iced tea (non-sweetened) but simply cutting back on the beer and liquor has caused me to drop some weight.... Keep in mind that I'm a little guy anyways.... so I'm actually 5'9 130lbs or so...... I know you're thinking "That's nothing" but imagine a guy with little stick-arms, and stick-legs with a beer belly..... I couldn't risk it!!!! I go for lots of walks with the wife/kid but I don't do any formal exercise ...... golf isn't exercise, it's a preview of purgatory..... |

Instead of 3 meals a day shift to 4 smaller meals.. That alone helped me quite a bit.
Also, think of it as a lifestyle change and not a diet. Keep a sustainable routine with the gym (variety helps as well to keep interest) Moderation is key as well as not leaving yourself starving.. Expect gradually loss not huge losses. I've had a hard time as I used to play basketball quite a bit but have retired due to have 3 ACL replacements. So I don't ever count on being as light as when I was playing ball since I do more weight training and do rock climbing, more muscle than cardio.. Last edited by Monkey; 03-24-2009 at 05:40 PM. |

![]() That will not be my story. It's amazing what you learn by others' mistakes. His whole life is something of a "what not to do with yourself" handbook, from which I am taking many of its teachings. The fact that I'm extra motivated to be there for my kids really makes the big picture easier to see. There are days when I really just want to go home after work, but those are pretty rare; exercising every day is simply part of my life, just as eating or breathing is. On those days, though, it's nice to have the iPhone for Blu-ray.com browsing while on the cardio bike. ![]() |

I would resort to Weight Watchers if I just couldn't get motivated. Fortunately, getting a 292 on a Cholesterol test is enough motiviation to get me working on eating right/exercising! Good luck, James. |

Both my parents do weight watchers and use the points system. They both lost alot of weight whenever they followed it strictly. For me, I'm a former college athlete and once I was outta college, got married, quit working out, and had a kid I put on quite a few pounds. I've finally had enough of it and just started my new routine a week ago. Already lost 5 pounds in in just one week. You don't need to resort to weight watchers, jenny craig, etc. to lost weight you just need to excecise some, eat alittle healthier, and eat small portions.
To me the biggest key factor is eating small portions. After a week of it I get full really easy now. I cut sodas out completely as well. |

No fast food, if I drink a soda, it'll be diet but that's just once in a while. Lately just started going to gym more regulary instead of a few times a month, now a few times a week. Been drinking lots of water. Overall, when I wasn't trying very hard for the month of Feb I lost about 10lbs. But since I took it more serious, I started the 10th of this month. On the 17th I lost 3 lbs. in one week. Hopefully lost a few more pounds after this week.
