wow, that is a long time! I haven't watched this movie since I was a kid. I remember liking it and wish there would be a way to watch it again on DVD at least.

I wouldn't hold my breath. This is from a 2011 shareholder meeting:

Quote:
Hansen: My name is Matthew Hansen; I’m a shareholder here locally. This year is a large anniversary for one of Disney’s classic films. Disney restoration team artistic supervisor Dave Bossert recently said, ‘There’s been a lot of internal discussion about it, and at some point we’re going to do something about it. I don’t know when, but we will. We want people to see it because we realize it’s a big piece of company history and we want to do it the right way.’ With this year being the 65th anniversary of Song of the South, I was wondering when we might see that. [Applause]

Iger: [laughs] We almost got through the meeting! I thought you were going to say it’s the 60th anniversary of Peter Pan, I was kind of hoping for that. I said last year at our shareholder’s meeting that I had watched Song of the South again and, even though we’ve considered from time to time bringing it back, I didn’t think it was the right thing for the company to do. It was made in a different time. Admittedly you could use that as context, but I just felt that there are elements to the film, while it was a relatively good film, that wouldn’t necessarily sit right or feel right to a number of people today. And, just felt that it wouldn’t be in the best interest of our shareholders to bring it back, even though there would be some financial gain. Sometimes you make sacrifices on the financial side to do what you believe is right and that’s an example of that.

Hansen: Would it be possible to have, kind of how they have the Disney exclusive videos that aren’t available in stores?

Iger: I just don’t feel that it’s right for us to use company resources to make it available, whether it’s wide or whether it’s narrow… narrowly available. It’s a strong belief that I have— consulted with other top executives of the company. They all agreed, and I think, just remember it as it was, and don’t expect to see it again for… at least for awhile, if ever.

Bootlegs are actually pretty common. Surprisingly, a lot of horror conventions carry them, which is where I got mine. Granted, it's not great quality, but it's certainly watchable, especially for such a great movie

Fantastic Idea for a thread! Now I no longer need to do an independent search online...

...IOW, he treats it like Lucas fanboys asking when we're ever going to see the Theatrical versions on Blu-ray.
(Oh, wait, Lucas wouldn't chuckle over it. )

Judge your hopes accordingly.

IMO, it's time for Iger to go. Much like Eisner, when came on, he did some great stuff (buying Pixar, make Lasseter head of animation, bringing back hand drawn features, ect.), but as of late he's made some horrendous decisions (removing "Walt" from Walt Disney Pictures, spending $$$ to change everything from Disney's to Disney, destroying the iconic ABC Daytime brand, cheapening the film brand, ect.).

Iger has done some great things for us cast members, he's brought back Disney animation to the level everyone wanted years ago, and he's also the main push behind the expansion of the parks. Without Iger, the avatar acquisition would have never happened. From a business stand point they shouldn't let him go until he's unable to do his job.

well personally, I am greatly disappointed with his choice to make Avatar land. While I love the idea of expanding the parks, I am highly against making a land for a non disney movie that only came out 3 years ago, and hasn't proven any longevity. I also think it is a bad decision to put it in Animal Kingdom, if any park, it should have been Hollywood Studios, where it's theme is movies and would also boost attendance since it's the lowest.

I'm not saying Iger is bad, but lately I'm seeing more mistakes than successes. As a viewer of ABC Daytime for years, Disney completely ruined it to the point where it's unwatchable. I also think his choice to remove Walt from Walt Disney Pictures is disgusting. And I am pretty mad that the next 2 animated films (Wreck it Ralph and Frozen) are CGI and the Mickey Mouse one after is rumored to be CGI, when it was said that there would be at least 1 hand drawn animated film in development at a time.

It is land that was cleared and was part of the original AK park but was scrapped. Animal kingdom needs a draw to it. After 5pm we have little to nothing to draw people in and we have horrible park numbers. Even guests have been wanting a place where "abnormal" animals can be seen such as Komodo dragons and also doesn't it seem weird to have animal kingdom without any sea life? This will allow them to bring in a lot of the animals that Cameron used to develop avatar.

Hollywood studios and magic kingdom already have too many rides and attendance numbers that are too high. This is due to too many attractions. It is smart to expand animal kingdom, people can go to zoos, they need to find a way to be different from them. To also be honest most of Disney world, a little less than 60% is supported by foreign tourists. They are the ones that have kept the parks running during the recession. They care about "thrill rides" and this is why universal has done so well.

it's coming out in the UK, Greece, Spain, and Portugal, which means it's not far away from a US release

I'd like a multi disk set of Three Caballeros/Saludos Amigos/El Grupo and a bluray release of Victory Through Air Power and the war cartoons.

I will be thrilled once they start announcing the package films, because those are the least likely to be released (although I'm sure they eventually will)
