Not when I worked there a few years ago. After midnight you'd be lucky to even see a cop car cruising in some parts of town. Even the Via Veneto becomes a ghost town.

In that case let's agree to disagree!

I really like Spectre, but I do think that third (or should I say fourth act?) falls kinda flat. They couldn't think how to end the film and it shows.

I can't recall why that torture machine doesn't work on Bond. Plot armour I guess.

Spectre is just a dirge. Awful cinematography and it was just plain dull. A lot of wasted talent in that film too.
SPECTRE is a case study in how not to make a Bond film with a budget of $250M-$275M ... As mentioned in the OP, even the chases are meh ... It has loads of boredom bundled in it

Yeah that money is anywhere but on the screen. The opening looks kind of costly I guess but after that there's nothing that looks really expensive.

Blofeld says "if" the needle hits the right nerve. The assumption is it didn't.

And I like the car chase; the the slow driver and the Bond/Moneypenny banter are amusing, and once it really does focus on the actual cars pursuing each other down by the river, it's solid (if short).

Yeah, I never minded the torture sequence. It's afterwards, I think, that it goes downhill. The first two hours are so good, though, that I still consider Spectre to be one of the better Bonds.

The most boring car chase in the history of the franchise (or maybe even action films)
  • A lack of energy in the chase
  • Average background score
  • Bond even takes time to call Moneypenny

Yeah the third act was always a mess, especially the mechanics of Swann leaving Bond and somehow being captured by Blofeld and put into the abandoned MI6 HQ, not to mention that Spectre would've had time to even set up that whole House of Horrors thing. But I don't remember when Bond movies were required to have airtight scripts and consistent internal logic.

I do agree but regarding the last point, in the awesome car chase in The Rock, Connery manages to make a call to information services to find his estranged daughters contact information.

I still don't get why people spend so much energy on something they don't like.

"I'm gonna devote twenty posts a day to talking about reviews and box office intake for a film I don't even like." The DCEU threads are the worst for that kinda thing.

It's a photo finish between the DCEU and Star Wars threads.

SPECTRE has its issues, it is mediocre at best much of the time.

However it is far from the worst.

The worst of the worst IHO is Die Another Day, which had they kept going with that formula would have killed the franchise creatively.

AVTAK and Diamonds are Forever are other stinkers. I am not a huge fan of The Man with the Golden Gun although the villain and premise are cool but apparently that film was legitimately close to ending the franchise entirely and Spy Who Loved Me basically saved it.

a lot of posts suggesting SPECTRE is "far from the worst"...

my take is that it's not very far at all-- but it's not the worst--

I like Pierce Brosnan just fine as Bond but he made 2 of the worst 007 flicks---
The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day....

Consolidating some of the cherry-picking examples in one post:

Dr. No v SP

[Show spoiler]Dr. No ($1M Mr. Bond):

SPECTRE (Blofeld meteorite):

Thunderball v SP

FYEO v SP

GE v SP

[Show spoiler]GE Tank Chase:

SP Plane Chase:

^ Another boring chase with a headache-inducing background score

DAF v SP

The issue here is SP does not improve upon any of those

Not really: even with a significant drop in takings it was hugely profitable ($97.6m on a $7m budget), but the divorce between Saltzman and Broccoli and the new deal with UA buying out Saltzman didn't help Broccoli work out what to do with the series next in a hurry. Which turned out to be remaking YOLT twice in a row with the same director.
