I used to hate exercise. Back in 2009, I became addicted to it. I woke up every morning at 4 to go to the gym for an hour, and then an hour after work. I was losing an average of 17 pounds a month. I went from a 4XL to a medium/large, and a waist from 48 to 30. I also gave up soda. I can't drink it anymore. It's disgusting. In 10 months, I lost 165 pounds without any supplements, surgery, or crazy alternatives. Plenty of exercise and a great diet! You can do it!

That last picture is only 10 months apart. To the left is from my 21st birthday vacation in October 2009. The right is fall 2010.

This thread is inspiring! I'm planning on starting slow by walking around the block everyday. Got to get the habit down first before increasing the frequency.

Trust me, once you start losing, it gets addictive. It's rough at first, but the results are sooooo worth it! Good luck detective!

I'm not a big fan of treadmills, but I do love the other cardio machines. I do an hour on the crossramp, when I'm finished, it makes it look like I just stepped out of the shower. I alter my inclines and resistance every few minutes. It's like going up and down hills.

That's cool, the treadmill can just go uphill but it would be nice to try some downhill walking.

My problem was exactly the opposite, I tried to gain some weight but couldn't before Christmas I was in pretty bad shape 5'7", 120 pounds!
I looked like a freaking skeleton and it scared the shit out of me.

Now I quit smoking and gained 20 pounds in a month. I can still gain a few pounds without changing my waist size, I never got over 128 in the past 20 years and now I'm at 140 pounds, I thought gaining weight was impossible in my situation. The problem is that I'm eating so much now that all the money I save on cigarettes I'm adding it to my grocery and if I keep eating like I do I will actually get fat and that something I fear as much than being too skinny...

I went from 250 to 215 in four months last year due to changing my eating habits and going on constant walks. So not only am I losing wait and eating less, I also rediscovered I liked cooking. I'm no chef or anything, but I definitely enjoy making my own meals over throwing something in the microwave. It's cheaper too.

That's my other problem. Eating habits as I have bad ones. I'll admit I'm a picky eater and I don't eat very well. I don't like salads so I don't eat those and I eat some vegetables and fruits but not as much as I really should.

Drinking I think I'm okay for. I have one can of pop a day except for Friday and Saturday when I may have like 4+. other than that it's either water or juice and no alcohol at all.

When I gave up soda, I swear I had the worst withdrawal headaches of all time. I went cold turkey with it. Fiet sodas are even worse than the regular kinds. They take out the sugar and replace it with aspartame or HFCS. The 0 calorie claim is full of shit. A lot of people think they can chug it 24/7 since it's '0 calories' and think they won't gain weight.

I'm a social drinker when it comes to alcohol. I just got burned out on it before I was 21. I'm a hard alcohol kind of person.

Grapes make the best snacks. They have fructose, but a very negligible amount to derail your diet. It's the natural sugar in fruits. They're all mostly water anyway. If you don't like the taste of plain water, the Crystal Light mixers can help that. I keep a stockpile.

It took me a while, but I got used to salads. I just had to find the right blend for me and now I am eating them almost daily. I have yet to find the fruits and vegetables I really like eating daily, unfortunately. Based on what Count Orlok's recommendation, I'm going to try different kinds of grapes.

As for soda, I have been slowly working my way down for the last year. I've gone from having two 3-liters a week to having barley one a week. It also helps that I have easy access to filtered water so I have been drinking more of that than anything else.

The 0 calorie claim is not full of shit. There are 0 calories in the drink. You can drink it all day and won't gain any weight. What some researchers think the problem is, is that fake sugars fool your body into thinking it is getting real sugar. Your body is then craving real sugar which is nowhere near as sweet as the fake kind, causing you to crave sugar and overeat.

And if you are not having the naturally sweetened Crystal Light, you are still most likely having Aspartame or Sucralose or some other fake sugar.

When I hit 44 I was 18 and a half stone (about 260lb). My kids are growing up fast and I could not keep up with them and my health was starting to suffer as well (breathing, joints, back pain etc). I finally hit that point in my life where I felt I needed to make a change and now, as I prepare to hit 46 in June I have been maintaining my weight at a modest 13 stone/182lbs ish (give or take a few lbs here and there in fluctuations). I am dealing with the fall out from Xmas where I put on 14lb but I'm aiming closer to 12stone/168lb this time.

Over winter I was sick for just over a month, so I haven't been at the gym as much. I've felt like a slob, just sitting on the couch all night and eating chocolate and sweets at work. As it's Lent next week I'm giving up all sugar and junk food for 40 days and 40 nights - I've done this before and it really is the best way to stave off cravings.

Back at the gym tonight so I expect I'll be sore tomorrow! I hate cardio machines so I was given some boxing gloves for Christmas; gonna get my cardio on the punch bag.

I'm giving up sugar for lent as well this year. I'm interested to see how different I will feel at Easter.

This is the first time I've seen a health thread on here. Not sure how I've missed it.

I'm only 5'6", but on 1/1/14 I was at 174 pounds. I started P90X3 and dropped about 20 pounds in 5 months. Then, I discovered eating Paleo and have been doing it ever since. A diet where I can eat tons of meat, butter, bacon and good fat? Sign me up!
I'm currently doing the Body Beast weightlifting program for the 2nd time and at 142 I'm up a little from my lowest weight of 136 last fall. Dropping 38 pounds on a 5'6" frame was huge for me.

My wife is doing Trim Healthy Mama and has dropped 85 lbs over the last 10 months. It's amazing what eliminating sugar from your diet can do for you.

I'm going to subscribe to this thread and keep up with everyone's progress. Eating better and exercising gives me more energy. More energy means watching more movies! Keep that in mind.
