Looks fantastic. Stephen Chbosky is one of the best directors out there right now.

I’ve heard about this musical about a million times (I’m a theater kid, and my sister was obsessed with it for a while) but I’ve never actually sat down and listened to the soundtrack all the way through or watched a bootleg. Up until the trailer for this came out, I had assumed it was a comedy. Lord how wrong I was.

I can only imagine how bad the "effect" will look in 4K UHD, LOL.

The fact that he is 3 years older than costar Kaitlyn Dever but looks 10 years older is not great!

I saw it on B'way and it's flawed, but very moving. By most accounts, casting Ben Platt in the movie (on which his dad is a producer) was a misfire, and his defensiveness over it adds fuel to the fire -- "the fact that I created the role and workshopped it for three years. Were I not to do the movie, it probably wouldn’t get made." Digital de-aging and ego has turned me off completely.

I read that, too. My eyes kinda bugged out on that one. Any sympathy I had vanished. He clearly grew up entitled. He has a nice voice, but...

Wooo another release I can feel very confident I’ll never pick up but when it’s 10 bucks I won’t be able to help it and I’ll just regret when seeing it browsing my collection

I'm not claiming to an expert but I grew up in New York and saw my first Broadway show when I was 11 years old (The Music Man with Bert Parks at that time). Before I left for California and including visits back to the mother ship, I've probably seen around 50 Broadway shows and countless national tours, regional and local productions out here . Add the shows that my daughter has stage managed locally and regionally and it's quite a bundle. I've seen pretty much every musical translated to the screen, some very good, others not so much.. I saw the National Tour productionof DEH in early 2020 and found it deeply moving (You Will Be Found still chokes me up). I have seen the movie and while, at first, Ben looks too old, it didn't take me long not to care. Despite some of the absurd and sometimes vicious critics reviews, Ben is Evan Hansen and his performance in the movie confirms that. The allegations of nepotism are unfounded to me. He and the rest of the cast singing live on camera (and damn, do they all sing well) and acting through the musical numbers, while obviously not the same as performing on a live stage, gives a level of authenticity that a canned track just can't. The issue of consequences is still there although there is an attempt to address it a bit more but overall this is a pretty faithful translation of the show to screen. The minute that it's released on disc it will be on my movie shelf.

Ben Platt is a 28-year-old that looks like a 40-year-old, playing a 17-year old in this movie. Yikes. While I'm a huge fan of the musical, this movie just looks like a misfire. I'm sure they could have found an equally talented younger performer to take the reins for this movie.

Not sure why people are flipping out about Ben's age when casting actors in their mid 20's as High School students has been a pretty common thing in movies for a long time. Almost the entire cast of Glee was close to hitting 30 years old lol. I have to say though the CGI or prosthetics they used to try and make him look younger only made him look worse lol

It’s because of that. You put one person who looks older with other people that look younger then he looks like he is going undercover as a Narc. The Glee kids look about the same age so there isn’t that weird double take. I mentioned it earlier, but Kaitlyn Dever is 3 years younger than Platt but looks much younger. Bianca Lawson played a teenager till she was about 30 because she didn’t look much older than the people around her. For the most part people are having fun, and Ben Platt’s “this movie wouldn’t exist without me” sounds a lot like Veruca Salt. “But daddy I want an adaptation NOW!!”

^^ What he said. I can usually look past older actors playing high school or college students, but Ben just looks WAY too old for this role. Maybe 5 years ago he would have been fine, but he just sticks out like a sore thumb in this movie.

I recently watched A Teacher on Hulu and Nick Robinson, who is 26, is MUCH more convincing as a high school student.
