Nice. This is the one I was wanting to get individually from the Olympics box set.

Archival interviews with director Kon Ichikawa

New documentary about Ichikawa featuring interviews with cameraman Masuo Yamaguchi, longtime Ichikawa collaborator Chizuko Osaka, and the director’s son Tatsumi Ichikawa

Trailers

New English subtitle translation

PLUS: An essay by film scholar James Quandt
Interesting. This has extras while the version in the Olympics box set doesn't... (unfortunately this is listed as a single disc release, so it's clearly re-encoded and will probably look worse as a result of the lengthy extras on top of a 3 hour film)

It's cool that they're releasing this to tie into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I just hope the games are still happening. If they're not, I guess we could watch this instead.

Well now I'm annoyed. I still wanted a decent amount of the other films, but quite a spit in the face of people who bought the eyewateringly expensive set to turn around and put extras on the standalone disc.

Should the other major 4K restored titles get seperate releases with extras then that will be extremely frustrating (although good to have those extras)

At the time, they said they had plans to release this as a standalone.

Didn't know that, but I'm really glad they did. Like others, this was the part of it I wanted most.

I was going to respond with "that depends on the encoder" but I noticed that the existing disc at ~35MBps bitrate uses almost 49GB for the transfer. Even if the extras are heavily compressed, it would take a masterly encoder of the likes of David Mackenzie to ensure equivalent quality video of the main feature.

So we can call the boxset version the Superbit edition then?

All I care about is the 80 minutes of additional material, especially if it includes track and field events.

comparing the prior DVD to the new bluray edition, the bolded are new to the bluray

• Audio commentary from 2001 by film historian Peter Cowie

New introduction to the film by Cowie

Eighty minutes of additional material from the Tokyo Games, with a new introduction by Cowie

Archival interviews with director Kon Ichikawa

New documentary about Ichikawa featuring interviews with cameraman Masuo Yamaguchi, longtime Ichikawa collaborator Chizuko Osaka, and the director’s son Tatsumi Ichikawa

Trailers

• New English subtitle translation

PLUS: An essay by film scholar James Quandt

~~

while the DVD retains:

Essentially the booklet

• Liner Notes by Legendary Sports Writer George Plimpton
• Complete List of Winners In All Events
• Symposium On Tokyo Olympiad, Excerpted From the Cinematheque Ontario Book Kon Ichikawa

guess I'll just donate this DVD off at the library since the new edition will make the DVD version essentially moot.

Iím sure the list of winner is available on Wikipedia or whatever databases/books are out there, however the Cinematheque Ontario book isnít exactly cheap (donít know what the excerpt is though.)

However the Plimpton essay is easily accessible:
