What's in a name? why not just call it HDVD (HD Versatile Disc), not HD - DVD, not HDDVD, but just plane HDVD!?!
It's interesting to watch this new format unfold. It's even more curious to see how much confusion will be created in the market when and if Blu-ray (BD) becomes the winning standard. Because if the products (ie: Players, Recorders, Media) are all referred to as BD(xyz) -- many customers will immediately draw a stare and look like deer running into the your head lights. Two camps come to mind... the ones who know (Geeks, informed consumer) and then there are the ones who will not keep up with all the acronyms which ultimately causes displacement of what to buy and keeps everyone guessing. Great for job security - bad for adoption by the masses! Blue Ray is cool as it identifys the technology difference between BD and HD - DVD, but customers are only going to care if it is a HD Versatile Disc, backwards compatible to DVD, CD (all formats et al) Since both specs use blue rays over red -- its the difference in the spec that ultimately matters... so Blu-Ray by name is misleading to the average consumer. By simply referring to Blu-Ray as a better spec and then only to call it BD when you naturally want to call it HDVD. So what's in a name? Does it matter -- its too early to tell. Marketing gurus out there will decide it's fate... a fate that could recreate DVD -/+ debate... ![]() ![]() |

But if I had an HDTV, I wouldn't say. "Oh, I'm watching HDTV." I'm watching TV.

I have come here to say that I will NOT be calling Blu Ray Discs DVD's. I shall now dub them...BRD's. Makes more sense than BD, and BD makes me think of Betas or A Tracks or something. BRD's sound better to me and they contain all the initial letters of the format itself. Blu Ray Discs. Thank you.

I agree! I am a custom audio video integrator. HD 720P and 1080i is old hat in the custom market. 1080P source material needs to surface. TI has a 1080P chip out this month, CEDIA will likely show 1080P equipment. Back to the source; HD_DVD format is only 1080i it will be outdated before it is mainstream. BueRay at 1080P needs to be the format. But I don’t think in a million years they can call it Blue Ray. Some how they need to keep the DVD convention. If consumers walk into Target store on Tuesday for there weekly DVD, toilet paper and Cascade dish soap run and see the wedding crashers on Blu-Ray this fall they will choke. Especially given that the majority of the population does not make bi-monthly equipment upgrades like most of us reading this forum. If they suspect for even a minute that they have to replace the familys new DVD player there will be a consumer mutiny. I think there is a subtle way of introducing it. Call it DVD enhanced with Blu-Ray for now. The masses will be none the wiser and the early adopters will embrace and cheer! I know I will.
