United Kingdom Department S: The Complete Series - Oct 02, 2017

Handling cases that are too baffling to be solved by normal police routine is all in a day's work for Department S a shadowy Interpol department that specialises in the inexplicable and the illogical.

Its small core of operatives include flamboyant novelist Jason King (Peter Wyngarde), man of action Stewart Sullivan (Joel Fabiani), and gorgeous computer expert Annabelle Hurst (Rosemary Nicols). Newly remastered in HD from the original 35mm film elements for this Blu-ray edition, Department S has never looked better!

Being a Yank, I never heard of this series until today. Since it's heavily discounted on Amazon, I decided to blind buy it. The reviews look good.

Also put an order in for this given the low price. Hopefully it gets filled. This looks like a cross between The Avengers and The X-files.

That's the vibe I picked up. I feel a bit embarrassed that I'd never heard of that particular show before. It seems like a fun watch. Plus the screenshots look really crisp.

It's more like a semi-serious Austin Powers and his team solve crimes no-one else can. Jason King was one of Mike Myer's inspirations.

For me, Peter Wyngarde as Jason King is one the highlights of 60s/70s ITC programming. Such style, such effortless flair. Department S never reaches the heights of The Avengers and Joel Fabiani and Rosemary Nicols aren't exactly Steed and Mrs Peel (or even Tara King), but Wyngarde more than makes up for it!

The Jason Kind DVD set is 4.99 at the moment. A worthwhile companion.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm actually missing this in my collection so I'll definitely bite at such a great price. Jason King on Blu-ray is probably not something that'll happen anytime soon... Although it could probably scrub up rather nice, just like Network's The Professionals which was also shot on 16mm.

Never really played for laughs but on occasions had its tongue quite firmly in its cheek.

To modern ears the premise does very much sound like that. Unfortunately while the pre credits setups are always intriguing and often excellent the payoff is almost always disappointing.
For fans of 60's series and ITC shows in general this set is essential and even though Peter Wyngarde always steals the show modern viewers will likely find many episodes hard going.
The initial idea is great but the script writers ran out of interesting idea quite quickly. For example, 2 episodes rely totally on the chief villain being an exact lookalike for somebody else.
Nevertheless I couldn't be without it and it looks superb on Bluray. The Bluray release also marks the first appearance of one episode totally uncut which may have only ever been shown uncut on its initial broadcast in 1969.
A major loss is the behind the scenes documentary that was on the dvd and is not on the Bluray.

The much lower budget and switch to 16mm for the Jason King follow up makes that one for serious fans only and is very light compared to Dept S although lovers of the music of Laurie Johnson will hear much to enjoy (and both series have multi disc cd soundtracks available too)

Well, my Department S has finally shipped from Amazon (purchased when it dropped to 15.99 a few weeks ago).

Had my shipping note yesterday - but today, it might be delayed (according to the DHL update)... so I checked it's delivery history so far... it seems like it's gong on it's own magical mystery tour (and could be a new case for Dept S, LOL!)

Have a look

That's very curious.
I got a text from DHL yesterday telling me my Amazon product was due to be delivered today. I checked the tracking and it was posted from Rome. As I've not ordered from Amazon Italy for a while I was curious to finally see what was in the mystery package.
It was indeed delivered by DHL and turned out to be my 2.99 Amazon UK purchase of the Network release of the 1975 kids serial Sky. This was a purchase from Amazon and not a seller.
Why it came from Rome remains unknown. Not much profit for Amazon on that one
