I bought Reservoir Dogs from BBV today (for $12.99). It's a different version (the cover doesn't have the two shining sliver strips on it and it's a different UPC #). I popped it in my PS3 and low and behold, it works .Here's the UPC #'s for those wondering which version is which:
Old one (with the shining silver on the front): 01223619154480 New one: 01223619154481 I might have to do this with Total Recall as well Hope this helps. |

I had this same problem with The Devil's Rejects and Basic Instinct. I have not repurchased Basic Instinct but I did get another copy of The Devil's Rejects a few months back and low and behold it worked fine right away. I tried to watch it last night and the same crap happened. It starts freezing and breaking up and then it won't work at all. This really sucks because it's one of my favorite films. My last attempt is gonna be the double-feature release of House/Rejects. Hopefully Lionsgate remanufactured the discs and didn't just plop the old ones in the cases. If anyone has already tried this and had any luck please let me know. I won't be able to pick it up for a week or two but I'll respond back with the results when I have them. Sick of this crap already.

One more thing:
My theory is badly manufactured discs. I think there was also a firmware issue with some of these older titles, possibly, but I really think it was a very large batch of badly replicated discs. Some may work longer than others and maybe some will never have problems but that's my theory. As long as Lionsgate represses most of these discs we'll be fine but trying to find the new ones is tricky as I found out with The Devil's Rejects. |

Ok here goes. If you've followed my saga on this thread you'll know that I've gone through 3 copies of The Devil's Rejects. All 3 either played once and never played again or didn't play at all. I even wrote to Lionsgate and got a replacement disc that didn't work. I finally said screw it and bought the double feature version with House of 1000 Corpses to see if I had any better luck. I did this because I figured they might be newly manufactured discs and I was positive the older discs were a manufacturing error. Guess what? It loads fast and plays flawlessly so far. Plus you can tell just by looking at the written side of the disc that it is a repress. The old version has a shiny goldish looking clearcoat on the back (this is the one with issues). The new version looks more silver on back than gold and the middle has a white ring (it's actually just the label peaking through from the front) that can easily establish the difference between the 2. However I went through 2 copies of this one as well because the first one I got at FYE had some weird markings on it so I went and immediately exchanged the set for another one. The second set had one repressed (Devil's) and one old pressing (House) so I just made sure I had both new ones in my case. This has been an extremely frustrating process that has cost me close to $50 just to get a version that plays properly (The Devil's Rejects is one of my favorite films). I tried Lionsgate customer service, short of drawing them a detailed description they are not much help. They even sent me an exchange copy that didn't play at all. I gave up on them. It's trial and error. There is an obvious difference to the way the discs look. Best way I can explain it is the new versions have and obvious whitish ring in the center of the playable side. I hope this helps. I am now confident that the early discs were manufactured poorly (it may have something to do with the early clearcoat). The only trick is to get a newly pressed disc like I previously explained YMMV. Good luck.

I commented about my Total Recall and my Stargate discs crapping out on me in another discussion:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...5&postcount=42 Long story short - it appears early Lionsgate are very susecptible to failure. I guess I still need to monitor (i) 3:10 to Yuma; (ii) Rambo collection and (iii) The Punisher as those are some other "early" Lionsgate release Blu-rays. |

that's 99% probability of the laser in your insignia going. quite common in those cheap players for the laser to go first. esp since it works in your ps3

Well - my third Blu-ray title has now died!!! Went to watch The Ninth Gate last night and even though it played fine last year - it will not load any of my players (Oppo - PS3 or Panny). In fact, I get the "No Disc" reading from my Oppo and the PS3 just spins and spins and then gives up trying to read the disc. Lionsgate disc rot has struck again!!! (previous Lionsgate title that rotted on me were the first versions of Total Recall & Stargate). Sigh.

My first thought was that older Lionsgate titles, like the first Terminator and Total Recall releases, were oddly using some outdated MPEG2 coding (because nobody really knew what they were doing back then), and that this might be part of the problem, but think they were using VC-1 by the time 2008 rolled around.
It's a good theory, but I'd still blame the Insignia. |
