Dumbo looks pretty lovely, Big Eyes did too, Dark Shadows I thought so too, Miss Peregrine is a bit on the ugly side. AIW is super ugly. Then again, it's Burton, he doesn't always make "pretty" films so to speak, but he has such a different, interesting style. Although, most of his films are really really good looking.

A lot of them are so flat.
Big Eyes did look good, and DS I had forgotten he made that, mind you that veers off into looking like it was shot on a red, even tho it was 35mm.

We will see this at the theater as the trailers have looked intriguing. I have some faith that Burton will give us his artistic interpretation of Dumbo’s story. And like Titanic or The Jungle Book we do know where this movie goes. It’s the journey that makes it fun, sad, endearing and overall entertaining.

Hopefully the 4K disc will be a looker. With all the CGI it’s hard to believe it’ll have a 4K DI, but if the live action portions are 4K or above, who knows?

Link to an interesting interview with Disney in connection with the restoration of the original for the 70th Anniversary release in 2011.

? Dark Shadows completely looks like it was shot on film. I'm not a fan of his switch to digital though, he wanted to shoot Big Eyes and Miss Peregrine on film but the labs disappearing at the time didn't help. I guess he's fully converted now.

Written by the "writer" (sarcastic air quotes) of some of the Transformers movies.

Yeah... Disney picked a real screenplay champ there.

Without a good script Tim Burton falls flat on his face almost every time.

Good news is it isn’t worse than Alice in Wonderland.

I urge you to read this thread by Eric Heisserer (Arrival, but also Nightmare on Elm Street, etc): https://twitter.com/highzurrer/statu...240065?lang=en

Which will tell you why you CANNOT judge a screenwriter's credits based on bad films. A writer may be credited as the main writer while being only one of several writers who took a crack at the film, the fact is, it happens a lot on big films especially. You have NO WAY of knowing who wrote what, when, or how much a writer's original work is left in the finished film. Also, it's kinda hard to make a good film from a bad script, no matter who you are, but duh, right?

You just don't know, unless the writer is Sorkin, or Zaillan, or Roth or one of those big time screenwriters.

Anyway, the writing as it is in the film, is FINE, it's perfectly adequate for the material, it's a very simple tale, although there are interesting, slightly more subversive themes than your average family film. I don't remember the original at all, so this was pretty fresh.

I just saw it today, so I need to let it simmer for a while, but this isn't full Tim Burton in a way, it's definitely a Tim Burton film but it's also very safe, a Disney film basically. The material is a bit limiting obviously, so you're not gonna get the same depth that you'd get in Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice, or Ed Wood, or whatever, obviously.

It's still pretty good, it moves along very well, it's such a sweet, oh so very sweet film. It's pure eye candy by the way, I'm bummed that Tim hasn't gone back to film since Dark Shadows (he planned to shoot Big Eyes and Miss Peregrine on film but labs were a problem) but I'll admit the Alexa 65 looks great on this, production design and costuming, as always, are fantastic.

Dumbo looks and feels real, absolutely adorable. The heart is there, as it always is with Burton, it's warm, it's overall pretty light even though there are some darker elements in this version. I thought the human characters worked pretty well, the performances are solid, although I expected more ham from Keaton

I've seen some calling it Tim's best film in years but his work lately has been pretty solid. I'm one of those who digs Dark Shadows, but Big Eyes, Frankenweenie are strong too, AIW is one of his rare misfires, Miss Peregrine is meh. Dumbo is a solid film overall.

The final scene is pretty great by the way.
