Job #2- Excellent co-workers and I learn a lot from the work, not to mention they give great raises and bonuses. But my boss was a mean, abusive micro-manager that treated me like a punching bag.

Job #3- Very nice boss and great co-workers, and the work is challenging which helps me learn a lot. But the raises and bonuses are peanuts, and the client we service is demanding, leading to high turnover and extremely long working hours.

If you notice that on all of my jobs, I have no complaints about the work nor have I ever had issues with working with my colleagues. So, you would think I'd the right job I'd be happy with. In fact, the cheap raises and bonuses on my current job wouldn't be a big bother to me if the work wasn't as demanding as it is. If I'm working 9-6 every day, then fine, be cheap with my salary. But given the fact that I'm killing myself working and burning the midnight oil, then I feel I deserve to be compensated better. A 5% raise on a promotion is a real slap in the face, given how hard I've been working.
That’s the pitfall of public accounting. You’re at the whim of your client. I went private and am never looking back. I work 9-5 most days and never work past 5 on Friday or ever on weekends unless I choose to do so for deadlines. Work/life is truly stressed here from the top down. For the first time in my accounting career I have off for MLK. This place is amazing!! I still hate accounting, though. Absolutely hate it with every fiber of my being. But my job is nice.

I don’t work in pubic accounting. I work in private equity. I’m a fund accountant.

Ah, right, you mentioned you were not in public. If you work in private equity, why do you have client work? I know two fund accountants in private equity firms who work for the needs of the firm, not the client. One is in real estate and the other deals with credit derivatives. They manage the accounting of the investments of the firm and neither of them work hours like yours (not even close) nor respond to client needs, ever.

Edit: just read up more on fund accounting for private equity. I think I have a better understanding if what you mean when you say your clients have demands. It appears my friends have more unique roles than the norm.

Hope you can find some time to relax today. I would normally rather work today and get a floating holiday to use at my discretion later but my firm made it a legal holiday for us this year. Oh well. It could be worse.

I'm currently working in fund administration. Our clients are private equity firms that pay us to do the accounting for them. My last job was an actual private equity firm where we did our own accounting.

We technically don't have to work today, but it's year end and the auditors are demanding stuff now. So that's why we choose to work and then we use the holiday after the audit when it's not so busy. But given how short staffed we are, I don't see myself being able to use that floating holiday anytime soon.

I remember floating holidays, if I get them at my new job again I'll be using them for personal stuff like having birthdays off paid.

That's okay! You are a valued employee and your achievements will be recognized.

I guess I shouldn't complain. I worked until 8 last night and I was feeling a bit antsy.

I make a living performing environmental inspections all over the north part of my state, which means that I spend a lot of my time driving through rural mountain towns to get from one site to another.

So...basically...I get paid to spend a lot of time listening to my favorite CDs in a work vehicle.

The paperwork is not fun, the occasional environmental court cases are not fun, and the associated hassles are not fun, but the field work is not bad at all.

On certain days, I cannot believe that I get paid to do this stuff. On other days, I'm burned out with the paperwork and administrative aspects of the job.

I've been doing this for just over 24 and a half years. When I hit the 25 year mark this summer, I will be eligible for early retirement, which I will not take, and, more importantly, I will be able to keep the health insurance benefits if I do leave the job.

I worked for a guy like that. Shortly after I started he wanted me to work Saturdays. I had young kids but he got pissed when I told him the kids had activities and that wasn't part of the deal. I had one day off between Thanksgiving and Christmas and he complained I wasn't reliable. Back then we had pagers and he felt I needed to answer any page up to 10:00 at night within minutes. Obviously after butting heads numerous times he fired me and I was so grateful. Best summer ever. He's in jail for bilking investors.

I don't love my new job but I do like it, which is a massive step up from the last 2 jobs I had as a dishwasher. Never been a storeroom clerk before and it's not what I went to school for 4 years to do so we'll see how long it lasts. I could even see myself moving to a different position in the same hospital that's more closely related to the degree I'm getting in May.

After being on furlough for nine months and then getting laid off and having to find a new job, I realized how nice it is to not work. But you gotta do what you gotta do to pay the bills and save for retirement.
