Explains a hell of a lot why I like Encanto's music better.

Minor spoilers ahead, just in case.

Did a double feature of this and House of Gucci last weekend, and I definitely ended up liking Encanto better. It was a lovely little movie- much more small scale than I was expecting. I only watched one or two previews, so I didn't know entirely what to expect; the trailers I saw made it seem like she went on some grand adventure, but keeping it all confined to the magical house was a really unique, totally Disney-esque take that I liked.

My biggest gripe was just the underdevelopment of some of the characters- there were a lot of characters, and for the most part, other than maybe the Dad and the older son, they all got their moment to shine. It's definitely a female-centric movie, which I liked, and Mirabel was a really likeable protagonist. I appreciated, too, that it was another Disney movie without a villain, being purely character-driven. The humor really did it for me, too, especially with Uncle Bruno's introduction.

The songs were really lovely too, even if I don't necessarily think it had a big "hit song" (which was actually kind of refreshing- instead of focusing on making a hit song, they just focused on making songs to fit the story). They're all very clearly Lin-Manuel Miranda's wheelhouse, and it was a lovely reflection of the culture.

I liked the message, too. I was worried they may reveal Mirabel to have some sort of late-blooming power, or alternatively, keep the other family's powers gone, but I liked that they kept everything as they were at the beginning. The message of "you're special just the way you are" is often used in family films, granted, but I thought it was handled really well here.

It's not the best Disney animated movie, and I personally wouldn't include it as an instant classic, but having gone in with zero expectations other than to be entertained, I really enjoyed myself, and can see myself rewatching it down the road.

This was absolutely fantastic and I'm glad we got to see it opening weekend in the theater. I found it charming and sweet and the liveliness of the characters really stood out; the depth to each individual family member was nice to watch unfold. Mirabel is a wonderful lead and was voiced exceptionally by Stephanie Beatriz. Overall, I'm so glad I enjoyed it because the trailers didn't really sell me on it so it's nice to be pleasantly surprised.

Soundtrack has been on a consistent rotation in our household since watching it.

It was a good film, but felt like it was too close to the general formula of other recent Disney animated films for me to really get much out of it.

We're introduced to the female protagonist as a child, and an older relative explains a special magical power/object that protects them/their home. Once older, that magical element is disappearing/gone and the heroine must go on a quest and through the power of teamwork bring it back.

Yes, I know I'm over simplifying the plots, but at their core Frozen I/II, Moana, and Raya have generally the same structure. I don't dislike it, but I think the studio needs to mix it up a bit more than they have recently.

Absolutely not, if only because the two women next to me who munched loudly on pretzels and talked the ENTIRE movie were decked out head to toe in an obnoxious amount of Gucci.

Been listening to the soundtrack for Encanto the last few days, and it's been growing on me. I'm not sure if it was just the seats or the audio or what, but there were a fair amount of lines that were a little hard to hear during our showing. It could also be the nature of Lin-Manuel Miranda's songs. In almost everything he's done, they're all so fast and clever and full of double meaning that they take a few listens to really get all the details. It's a really fun, unique Disney soundtrack, and I remain steadfast in my opinion that LMM is a genius.

dang, sorry to hear.

And yeah, I'm really liking the soundtrack as well. I'm so mad the CD didn't get released the same time as the movie!

I'm surprised there's not more conversation about this film now that it's available on Disney+.

Animated film threads typically don't get a lot of traffic, so I'm not all that surprised.

I watched this yesterday and thought it was nice. Nothing extraordinary, but I don't feel like I wasted my time with it. The animation is beautiful of course and I enjoyed that it has a much more intimate conflict (no chasing dragons or fighting evil or saving China etc.). But it does feel like an "idea" film with a story and characters vaguely added to it. Though my biggest disappointment was with the songs. I just didn't connect with any of them besides "Dos Orguitas." Perhaps LMM just isn't for me, as I didn't think much of Moana's songs either.

Just like with Raya and Luca, this was fine, but not extraordinary. I liked it just a tad more than those two thanks to the addition of songs and the lack of Raya’s obnoxious out of place TikTok generation humor. But the story again felt kinda shapeless and just more of 90 minutes of feel good vibes. Something I’ve noticed Disney films lack lately are strong villainous characters to really give the story some drama and clear stakes. I’m pretty sure the last time this happened was way back in Tangled. After that we either had the twist villain, no villain, or the mildly threatening person who is redeemed at the end. The songs in this were easily the weakest I’ve heard from Lin-Manuel and a huge step down from Moana. But hey, it was cute and pleasant and beautiful to look at. Love Latin culture!

6 out of 10

Here’s how I would rank Disney’s animated films since Tangled:

1. Tangled
2. Moana
3. Wreck-It Ralph
4. Winnie the Pooh (2011)
5. Zootopia
6. Frozen
7. Ralph Breaks the Internet (never understood the intense hate for this one)
8. Big Hero 6
9. Frozen II
10. Encanto
11. Raya and the Last Dragon

Watched this with our kids today. Neither of them liked it (girls ages 9 and 4). My wife and I didn’t like it either. We didn’t care for the music, the story, or the characters. The characters were fairly flat and not really likable. The music sounded like typical Miranda music, but wasn’t as good or memorable as Moana.

Was the animation cool? Yeah. It looked pretty.

On another note, it’s interesting that yet again, Disney has made a movie about Latinos and it’s in a rural/pastoral setting instead of in the city where the vast majority of us live.

Since Tangled, here’s how I’d rank Disney films….
1. Big Hero 6
2. Frozen
3. Tangled
4. Moana
5. Winnie the Pooh
6. Zootopia
7. Wreck it Ralph
8. Frozen II
9. Raya and the Last Dragon
10. Ralph Breaks the Internet
11. Encanto

I’ve seen others also compare it to Luca - it’s not a comparison in my opinion. Luca was stellar. Encanto? Not so much.

It's not like other Disney animated movies haven't done that before.
