I was close to sending it there a while back and remember the drama that was going on. Probably should have sent it to Kurtis. To this day that player still has a stuck loading tray and I have never been able to use it. Purchased it as far back as like 2003 or 2004, which is a long time to be toting around a broken player. It was only around $200 and was not advertised as being broken, but I'm sure the seller knew given the price. I probably spent around $60 or so in total at two different electronics repair shops who both claimed to have taken a look at it only to realize they had no idea how to repair it.
I think Kurtis is done working on players. He answered a few of my questions, but in the end told me to try to fix it myself as the labor costs were high. Even if he opened yours up, I am not even sure he's got the parts to fix it. I reckon you would need to ship it to him which would probably cost close to $100 round trip and then who knows what he's charging for labor these days. He didn't even have a spindle motor so my machine is a paper weight right now as it no longer spins, but I have learned a lot after the "machine autopsy"...

I gutted this player and really tore into it. My IT repair background helped but they are still a PITA. I would feel so much more confident if I had parts.

I have owned 3 McIntosh 7020s and they've all had issues! A friend of mine ended up throwing his 97 in the garbage. It just had way too many problems.

One of the issues I did have included a loading tray issue. A video showing what your issue is would definitely help but my tray was getting "stuck" and what it turned out to be was a broken cog on the wheel which the tray slides back and forth on. That could be your issue but these things are crazy tedious and so many little things can go wrong with them.

I circled the part I am talking about. It's a black rod with the white gears on each side and is the width of the loading tray. It is secured by two screws-one in the left rear and one in the top right

I actually encountered a new problem with my loading tray. I decided to put my. machine back together after not being able to find a new spindle motor. I had a helluva hard time getting the tray back in. Turns out the clamping mechanism lowered down preventing it to slide into place. I had to manually turn the gears to get it back up and even now that it's in, something isn't right with it. Taking a break from it for now.

This was the exact issue I had on a CLD-D501 player. The plastic cog similar to the one you circled in that picture had chipped teeth, so it just repeatedly slipped unless I helped it with my hand. Made a horrific grinding sound, hard to miss.

Gave the player away once I found that V2200 that Kevers has now.

I bought a second lx-900 but the laser is going out. The seller gave me a good 600 and I need to do a laser swap but am not a repair person.
I need to figure out what is making the jacks for video 1 and analog on my main 900 go bad and why it hates warped discs so badly.

I would love to get the CLD-97 working to see what a premium player can do. The analog look of LD can be a bit odd at first on modern displays but it's something that one can acclimate after a few viewings. I'd imagine my CLD-1010 is out of alignment and in need of a tune up considering it's from like 1987 and doesn't get used much. I've actually been watching some dvds on an old crt tv with very dated RCA connections and the softer picture is an interesting, alternative way of viewing. It's like watching a dvd the way people saw them when the format debuted. In comparison, a solid dvd on a decent quality, more recent tv and using standard hdmi can arguably look fairly close to a blu in motion.

They were initially trying to turn their purchased Coherent Acoustics format into a variable bit rate format but could not do that. They also could not send their specifications to the DVD forum by the late 1996 deadline, so the Japanese politely declined their petition for mandatory status. Once they had their codec worked out as a CBR (constant bitrate) 1536kbps and later half-bitrate 768kbps, players that recognized the stream and could output it to external receivers and pre-pros came with "DTS Digital out". Players that could natively decode the bitstream came out a lot later and were fairly rare.
I know I just didnít want to get too technical into the mandatory audio track requirement. Reality is though dts was late because they didnít understand until it was too late that they couldnít just slap their audio on there flagged as PCM. I understand DVD at minimum had to contain either PCM or DD as a mandatory audio track. Itís also the main reason most all dts DVDs had a DD 2.0 track otherwise they donít meet DVD specifications.

I love the fact I can just hear without needed a HT setup or soundbar if I don't play the AC-3 and DTS discs as I have to rebuild my setup. But with every BD it seems I have to have extra speakers or something forcing me to use the remote.

LaserDisc will always be my favorite format.

Well if you give up and want a newer one...(no not my listing - interesting that it ships from the US though).

Added the standard AC3 edition of Heat (1995) and the CBS/FOX Special Widescreen Edition of South Pacific (1958) to my Laserdisc collection. Both were local finds.

Just got these two, never seen either before. I think The Crazies was never released on LD outside Japan, too.

@sfmarine the 7020 since it uses Pioneer parts the models for Pioneer CLD-2080 and CLD-3080 also use the same motor, lens, transport. That is the only similar feature to the 7020 the rest is different. Working units for those models sell for about $200. Much cheaper than a CLD-97.

youtube video for cld-2080:

You can clearly see it's the same for the motor, transport and lens.

I did not realize they used the same motors but yeah everything looks similar from what I can tell. Maybe I should try to hunt down a used 2080/3080 in hopes for a working spindle motor.

Yeah it's why I posted that for you it likely uses the same motor and same lens, transport mechanism as the cld-97 and 7020. If you ever stumble on a cheap working used one buy it for parts for your Mcintosh LD player. Thanks for those pics of the inside of the 7020 seems like a well built tank of an LD player.

Yeah...finding that player cheap on eBay will be a great work around/way to get my 7020 up and running again. I was a bit saddened when Kurtis did not offer to take the player for service.

The player is indeed built like a tank and is quite the conversation piece.
