Default The Nanny (1993 - 1999) - HD Version

The 90s sitcom "The Nanny" has recently started streaming on HBO Max and I was very suprised to discover that it actually looks really good compared to other streaming services or the DVDs. I always assumed the show was shot on video and so an improvement wouldn't be possible. But this looks like actual HD a lot of the time. The colors and sharpness are really improved but there is still a slight video look to the show so it could just be an upconversion. On the other hand "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" on HBO Max which was shot on video and upscaled to HD still looks like crap, so I really don't know.

Has anybody else had a chance to check out the show on HBO Max yet?

Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely check it out now. This is one of the shows I miss happening upon back when I had cable.

Is it cropped? Or original aspect ratio?

It is in OAR.

I checked out a bit today. It does have a remarkable level of detail for something that originated on videotape.

That said, that detail came at a cost - this is probably the most heavy use of DNR I've seen in a long time. Every thing looks like shiny plastic, particularly the faces. It was funny, but I noticed it on Niles the most, because of his skin tone and age. His face looks smooth as a wax figure.

Of course, this is a live-shot sitcom, and the source was clearly limited - so it's not like some cinematic crime that they DNR'd it so heavily. But it was a "wow" moment when I started to watch. There also seems to be some sort of motion enhancement, but I'm not as familiar with those processes so I can't comment other than to say I noticed it.

Again, though, there is some nice detail. And overall it does look really nice for a 90's sitcom.

This is essentially the only sitcom I've ever watched from start to finish and one of my all-time favorite shows.

Nice to hear the streaming is an upgrade over the already pretty darn good Shout! set released a while back.

Heck, I'd take the DNR on Blu-rays, frankly.
