Default HBO's "The Leftovers" Discussion (2014-2017)

Looks like HBO ordered a ten episode first season of this drama.

The Leftovers: The Leftovers takes place in the wake of a global "Rapture"—which may or may not be the Biblical rapture—and centers on the people who didn’t make the cut, and are left behind in a suburban community.

Quote:
'Leftovers' for HBO: HBO has picked up a 10-episode adaptation of Tom Perrotta's The Leftovers, the first big TV project from Damon Lindelof since Lost. USA TODAY's Jocelyn McClurg said of Perrotta's 2011 satirical novel about those left behind in the rapture (***½ stars): "Perrotta brings his customary satirical 'A' game to The Leftovers: shaking and stirring wit, snark, social commentary — along with a dark dash of paranoia and menace — into his cocktail mix." Perrotta (one of USA TODAY's "cool fall" authors) released the short-story collection Nine Inches on Sept. 10.

30 minutes into the pilot and I'm bored out of my mine. I had practically miniscule expectations going in and it's still worse than I expected. I have no idea what HBO saw in this.

It's focused more on the characters than the mystery, which is a fine idea. However, the characters are mostly unlikable and uninteresting so far. Acting is below average and Theroux is a mediocre lead, IMO.

What the [...] did I just watch? What... I can't even-- What was that?

HBO greenlit a series based on that pilot? A 70-minute mish-mash of nothing. They couldn't fit that into an hour? Wow. I'll never complain about another episode of True Blood again.

+1

Agreed. Boring and with incredibly dull writing.

I turned it off right after the Dog, I'm just not into seeing shit like that and Lindeloff has already gotten away with too much of my time and money. No More!

Despite some of your reactions, it has received some pretty solid reviews from critics, I'll give it a go tonight.

Definitely a slow-burner, but I don't consider that a bad thing.

Yeah I liked it, loving the bleakness, definitely keen to check out where this goes.

Insanely positive reviews. I believe same thing was said about The Wire, get past the first episode and you're well and truly into it.

I thought it was fantastic. Then again, I'm a big fan of bleak and depressing. Much better than that garbage True Blood that's on before it. Talk about clumsy writing...

I thought the pilot was very, very well done. Yes it was slow, yes they barely told you anything about what is going on and yes it was hard to watch at some times. But with that said I felt almost hypnotized watching and just trying to put all the of pieces of the puzzle together. I think those looking for fast answers and pay off will be very disappointed, but for those that like methodical and slow-burn this, so far seems to very worth the investment.

The most interesting part of the pilot to me personally was how the event has effected the younger generation. The party scene in particular highlights the fact that this is a much different world that today's, all the teenagers seem lost, just going through the motions, trying to feel something... anything. It really highlights the fact that this is a dystopian future.

Especially given that it's highly unlikely that they'll ever say exactly what happened to the Disappeared. Lindelof and Perrota have said that they're not interested in what happened, only in how it affects they people left behind.

Not really. Perrota is the lead on this, having written the novel it's based on.

Lindelof only had to come up with the title of the show and it would still be shat upon just to spite him.

Thumbs up

I thought it was a fine start. Lots to think about in a Pilot. Not sure how much impact Lindeloff has with the story. I've heard that the novel that the show is based on isn't very satisfying.
It's hard...having Thrones withdrawl....to get into something like this. But it wasn't bad. I'll stick around for a bit.

I love slow burns, but this just wasn't interesting to me at all. I get that it wants the audience to be more interested in the characters than the mystery, but the characters don't seem likable or interesting at all.

Agree. I kind of liked it too. Definitely a slow burn series and focusing more on characters than the actual event. I like the fact that it was "different" and totally went outside the box of what HBO normally does.

I think if you're the kind of TV viewer who expects immediate results and answers, you're going to be disappointed and hence some of the negative reactions here.

I hope they go more into why Chief Garvey's family broke apart after the event.

And remember, this show isn't about finding answers to the mystery right away. It's about the people left behind and how they are dealing with it.

Hence...cough....the title of the show.
