Just in time for its 50th anniversary, Star Trek may be returning to the small screen.

Prolific producers Alex Kurtzman is developing a new take on the beloved sci-fi classic for TV, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. A formal announcement with additional details is expected to come later this morning.

The drama is set up at CBS Television Studios, where Kurtzman and Orci's K/O Paper Products banner is under an overall deal. A search is under way for a writer to take on the cult hit. A network is not yet attached but the goal is for the potential series to be on the air late next fall on either cable or a streaming service, sources say. Should a new Star Trek series come together for next fall, it would air as the franchise is poised to celebrate its 50th anniversary as the original series debuted Sept. 8, 1966.

The new Star Trek TV series would continue Kurtzman's relationship with the beloved franchise. He currently produces the Star Trek feature film series, writing 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2009's franchise revival. The fourth in the franchise set for 2019.

Sorry CBS, I'm not paying $5.99 per month to your shitty streaming service just to watch this.

I hope this flops big time because if it's a success it could lead to CBS and other networks making shows only available on their online platform.

So they expect people to pay $6 a month because of one damn tv show? I mean, I know a lot of TREKKIES will, but I don't think the number will be big enough to make this a good idea.

You know the suits at CBS were like "How can we make people want our new streaming service?" And the one guy who is now in the corner office goes "Star Trek!!"

It's kind of frightening ... not quite as frightening as Heidi Klum's Jessica Rabbit costume, but I'm still scared.

I don't like paying a monthly fee either. I guess I could pay the fee for one month, binge watch all of the episodes, and then unsubscribe. Would not be surprised to see this being heavily pirated.

What bothers me is that once again a Star Trek series is being used to launch / push a new "network." In this case a brand new streaming service but still, did they not learn their lesson with Voyager?

Star Trek has been and can once again be a very successful TV series no doubt, but I've never felt it should bear the weight of pushing a new channel, network, service, whatever.

Yay. Right to VOD where it will immediately die because nobody will pay for a CBS VOD subscription.

Obviously we don't really have much info at present time, but I wonder if CBS would release this proposed new series on any physical media being that it will be geared towards pushing the All Access network?

Unless your company is called Netflix or Hulu, there's a 99.9% chance I will not give you my money.

Still, I'm ecstatic to hear that Trek is coming back to TV. Ideally, I'd like for the show to take off several years following the events of TNG/Voyager/DS9. That way, actors like Patrick Stewart and Tim Russ can make the occasional cameo. I'm all for a cast of original characters and adventures.

I need more info before I form an opinion on this.

I'm hoping for 100 years after Voyager in the Prime Universe.

I'm not about to read that over-long mumbo jumbo announcement again but I think I saw something in there about CBS All Access allowing you to watch every CBS show ever. This probably means they will pull any CBS shows from any current streaming services. I'm going to have to refresh my memory on which shows CBS owns both today and in yesteryear to see if this proposition has more value than just Star Trek. I don't subscribe to cable, so there's a chance the expense could be rationalized... But really, Star Trek is all you need to say and my wallet is coming out.

Perhaps if they offered their channel as an optional add on to Hulu for example where you would pay an extra $2 - $3 a month (like they do with ShowTime though I know that's like $8 more) I would be more considerate, but IDK about adding an entire new service at an additional $6.

I already have NetFlix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. It adds up to a little over $20 a month and I have more than enough content, so the next possible add on would have to be something really special / worth it for my consideration.
