Default The Muppet Show on DVD

I haven't selected one of the flag icons for this thread, as there have been DVD releases of the first three seasons of The Muppet Show in more than one country.

Does Disney own the rights to everything to do with Star Wars now? I thought the reason we didn't get a DVD release of the fourth season of The Muppet Show, was because Mark Hamill guest starred in one episode.

Nope. In fact, the Mark Hamill episode is one of the Season 4s which has been released on DVD. The issue with Season 4 and Season 5 was/is related to music rights. It's most likely that the cost of the licensing would outweigh the predicted profit, but I have heard some people say that some of the records were lost and they couldn't identify all of the musicians in order to get the licenses. My understanding is that the restoration was done on season 4 & 5 and that it has aired in some countries, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

(EDIT: sorry, the question I didn't answer, Yes, by purchasing Fox, Disney owns Star Wars outright now, although there are persistent rumors suggesting that they might have to pay Lucas something for use of the stuff that Lucas created.)

Ah, that old chestnut again, music clearance issues. I didn't go into detail (thanks for your detailed, but easy to understand reply), but I referred to music clearance issues in another thread in this sub-forum yesterday (about various Warner Brothers-owned TV series).

Music rights were the main issue for seasons 4 and 5 releases but have since a while now they've all been cleared.

Now it's the matter of paying off any currently living musicians and finding backing tracks for seasons 4 and 5 (I guess Disney wants to restore/remaster them properly and I don't blame them).

I wish they could have released SOME of the final two seasons rather than nothing at all. I know there were a few musical numbers that were cut out of season 1’s DVD... I’m sure some of the episodes in seasons 4 and 5 were “unsalvageable” due to music or guest likeness, but they could have at least either put out “best of” releases or even just the Muppet segments.

So much Muppety material that we should be able to watch!

If you are both NTSC and PAL compatible*, there are at least 34 out of the 48 episodes from season 4 and season 5 released on DVD. I don't know if they conform to a general fan consensus of what the best episodes are.

* = note that there is no speed-up, the show is native PAL because it was produced in the UK.

Time Warner 15 volume "best of" (NTSC):
https://muppet.fandom.com/wiki/Best_of_the_Muppet_Show
* vol 1 - Elton John / Julie Andrews / (501) Gene Kelly
* vol 2 - (417) Star Wars) / (511) Paul Simon / Raquel Welch
* vol 3 - Harry Belafonte / (523) Linda Ronstadt / (401) John Denver
* vol 4 - Peter Sellers / John Cleese / (407) Dudley Moore
* vol 5 - Alice Cooper / Vincent Price / (518) Marty Feldman
* vol 6 - Steve Martin / (515) Carol Burnett / Gilda Radner
* vol 8 - (424) Diana Ross / (506) Brooke Shields / Rudolph Nuryev
* vol 9 - (505) James Coburn / Sylvester Stallone / (509) Debbie Harry
* vol 10 - (524) Roger Moore / Edgar Bergen / Danny Kaye
* vol 11 - Roy Rogers / (410) Kenny Rogers / (514) Mac Davis
* vol 12 - Liberace / Rita Moreno / (419) Lynda Carter
* vol 13 - (513) Tony Randall / (409) Beverly Sills / Pearl Bailey
* vol 14 - (414) Liza Minnelli / Madeline Kahn / Mummenschanz
* vol 15 - (508) Señor Wences / (411) Lola Falana / Juliet Prowse

"The Best of the Muppet Show" 4-volume UK release (PAL):
https://muppet.fandom.com/wiki/Best_...uppet_Show_(UK)
* vol 1 - (417) Star Wars, (418) Christopher Reeve, (419) Lynda Carter, (509) Debbie Harry, (524) Roger Moore, plus Peter Sellers and Sylvester Stallone
* vol 2 - (422) Andy Williams, (504) Shirley Bassey, plus Bruce Forsyth, Steve Martin, Bob Hope, John Cleese, and Danny Kaye
* vol 3 - (407) Dudley Moore, (501) Gene Kelly, (506) Brooke Shields, plus Peter Ustinov, Vincent Price, Elton John, and Raquel Welch. Note that Vincent Price is edited (same as the season 1 release), but Elton John is the correct edit (unlike the season 2 release)... I think. Maybe I have that backwards.
* vol 4 - (401) John Denver, (410) Kenny Rogers, (414) Liza Minnelli, (507) Glenda Jackson, plus Twiggy, Julie Andrews, and Alice Cooper

"The Very Best of the Muppet Show" 3 separate UK DVD releases (PAL):
* vol 1 - (417) Star Wars, plus Elton John and "Of Muppets and Men: The Making of TMS"; also has a collection of additional sketches, includes S4 & S5 material
https://muppet.fandom.com/wiki/The_V...Show:_Volume_1
* vol 2 - (524) Roger Moore, plus Sylvester Stallone, three Muppet Fairytales, and another collection of additional sketches
https://muppet.fandom.com/wiki/The_V...Show:_Volume_2
* vol 3 - (419) Lynda Carter, (424) Diana Ross, and (521) Johnny Cash, plus the other three Muppet Fairytales

"De Beste Afleveringen van the Muppet Show: Zangers, Zangeressen" a 2-disc Dutch set (PAL):
(401) John Denver, (414) Liza Minnelli, (424) Diana Ross, (504) Shirley Bassey, (511) Paul Simon, (516) Gladys Knight, plus Charles Aznavour (intact), Elton John (correct edit), and Alice Cooper
https://muppet.fandom.com/wiki/De_Be...s,_Zangeressen

There's another Dutch set "Komieken, Acteurs, Actrices" (3 PAL discs) which has 4 relevant episodes, but it's hard to find and the above options already cover them all.
https://muppet.fandom.com/wiki/De_Be...rs%2C_Actrices

"Le Muppet Show Coffret, vol 2", a 5-disc French set (PAL). This set is the most concentrated on the missing seasons (along with half of season 3), but unfortunately they removed the so-called "UK spots"; nevertheless they are the only source for several of the episodes, specifically discs 2 & 3. These discs are also sold separately, so I'll use those numbers:
vol 6: (414) Liza Minnelli / Harry Belafonte / Helen Reddy / (424) Diana Ross / (524) Roger Moore
Vol 7: (413) Dizzy Gillespie / (501) Gene Kelly / (401) John Denver / (404) Dyan Cannon / (405) Victor Borge
Vol 8: (419) Lynda Carter / (415) Anne Murray / (421) Doug Henning / (511) Paul Simon / (502) Loretta Swit
Vol 9: Alice Cooper / (506) Brooke Shields / (521) Johnny Cash / Elke Sommer / (410) Kenny Rogers
Vol 10: Sylvester Stallone / Raquel Welch / (402) Crystal Gayle / (417) Star Wars / (422) Andy Williams / (509) Debbie Harry

There's also 20 volumes of French discs which are similar to the Time-Life discs, but I can't find much information about the individual contents of those.

Supposedly "The Fantastic Miss Piggy Show" special was released in Brazil along with (502) Loretta Swit, and possibly a similar Israeli release, but I've never actually seen any copy for sale anywhere, I think it's possible it was announced but never released.

Unreleased (as far as I can find):
(403) Shields & Yarnell, (406) Linda Lavin, (408) Arlo Guthrie, (412) Phyllis George, (416) Jonathan Winters, (420) Alan Arkin
(503) Joan Baez, (507) Glenda Jackson, (510) Jean-Pierre Rampal, (512) Melissa Manchester, (517) Hal Linden, (519) Chris Langham, (520) Wally Boag, (522) Buddy Rich

FYI the Time Life DVDs may be hard to acquire. I had a bit of a time trying to get the entire series and I was only looking for the VHS versions.

To give you some idea, it took me something like 12-18 months to collect the 8 I wanted, and I probably spent $100, more or less. Definitely nothing over $20, but admittedly a few of the later ones cost more than I'd generally like to spend on a single episode. A few of them are definitely either too expensive or just too rare on the ground, but fortunately those episodes have alternate sources anyway.

The thing is, when I was really young I collected baseball cards, and when I got older I collected comic books, so I do kind of enjoy this sort of "randomly dispersed full set" collecting, the quest to track them all down at reasonable prices is part of the fun.

Yes, I actually did track down the Best of The Muppet Show DVDs a few years ago! Which is ironic because I initially stayed away from them because I thought it was such a rip-off putting only three episodes onto a disc and held out for season sets.

Still hate how much space they take up though lol I wonder if anyone’s made custom cover art for a combined set (I’d probably do seven in one case and the other eight in another case).

I bought a few random large cases at one point; I bought an 8, a 12, maybe a 9 or a 10. I was trying to figure out which cases would work best for consolidating parts of the collection (at least the TV stuff), which I never got around to, but I used one of those to store the TL Muppet Show discs I have. I think they do make 15-disc cases, since you bought them all, although you might balk at spending that much on a case.

I wish they'd release the Muppet Babies (1984) on DVD, because the first three seasons were animated by TOEI Animation and then the rest were by AKOM (a Korean company).

I love the old works of TOEI, they look wonderful.

Sadly, to this day the best looking source is a TVRip and I don't like to support piracy, but to preserve it there's really not much else.

Most common seen on the web:

Off topic, but that Peter Sellers episode always made me cry, because of that quote he said in the episode, “There is no me, I do not exist. There used to be a me, but I had it surgically removed”. Given what we’ve heard about him, how he was always too lost in his characters to have any meaningful life, it was a sad thing to hear, even if the context was meant to be funny.

It’s always the funniest that are the saddest. Sellers, this goes out to you (replace Robin Williams with Peter Sellers, it still works).

This includes seasons 4 & 5, and judging by the theme song clip, the quality is really good. It's still up in the air whether or not they will be uncut. If they got the music rights sorted, then maybe they could release the rest on disc... :coughcough:

For me, the two big questions:
  • Will every episode be uncut?
  • Will the episodes include the UK segments?

My DMs are lighting up, so here’s what I know: not much. I know they’ve used some high-quality source material to make the eps look GREAT. As for music rights, UK segments, the Chris Langham episode, etc….I don’t know. I’m as much on the edge of my seat as all of you!

As far as I understand it, the "archived" versions of the Muppet Show that were restored in the mid 2000's are all the US cuts with the UK segments cut back in. That is, they still have "commercial break" fades which would not have been present in the original international versions, which were prepared for markets with fewer or no commercials. Technically they are missing a few frames here and there, but they should have all of the bits intact. There are a few "episode specific" endings which are probably up in the air, but those are just single shots anyway. (In fact, after further thought, I would expect all of the so-called "Zoot tags" to be uniformly replaced with the Disney tag, as they have on Disney Channel airings, which would include the episode specific variants.)

Supposedly, they secured the rights to the missing music from season 1 for future releases, but the German DVDs which have all of the missing music numbers still has missing footage from the Joel Grey episode, and accidentally omitted something from Paul Williams which was on the original discs. So I would expect the episodes to include the previously missing music, but not have the extra bits from Joel Grey, and to only have the modified audio for Vincent Price and the re-shot version of "Halfway Down The Stairs" in whichever episode that's in. [That last one is actually kind of neat -- they reshot the entire thing because the first version was darker and read as creepy, but they used the same audio, so they sync up perfectly.]

Me, I'm just hoping they have it in the UK Disney Plus, because I want the episodes in PAL rather than NTSC.
