Default All Xbox, 360 and One B/C games are playable on Xbox Series Consoles

After 500K+ hours of testing, we’re are excited to share that all Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games playable on Xbox One today, except for the handful that require Kinect, will be available – and look and play better – on Xbox Series X|S at launch.

https://twitter.com/jronald/status/1321437398757072896

That is if it is already supported via the current backwards compatibility program.

But now we know they've spent 500,000+ hours testing every single one of them and they work perfectly.

I just want more than the selection we have, there's some games I've played that not Backwards Compatible and it sucks. Doesn't have to be Optimized for anything, I'd like to play those old games from Consoles I've played on but never owned.

The studios that own the games have to allow it. It’s sad cause games like Godfather 2 and Scarface. never will be BC cause I know EA and the Mario Puzo estate have issues and that’s why there was never a Godfather 3. And as far as Scarface goes they would have to deal with Universal. I remember when Phil Spencer announced they was putting adding new BC games on hold to focus on the Series X. So sometime by next year we should be getting more games.

I only got the 360 literally at the end of it's Cycle when the One dropped. I've recently Opened up about my age, I'm on the young side, so it was a family console so we didn't have a whole lot of games. So what I'm hoping to get, whether it was a good or bad game, I'm certain we're not going to get.

I don't want to sound like "that guy", but it's not like a 360 and those games are impossible to find.

True, but it sure would be nice to just be able to stick any XBOX disc in and have it work, since technically it isn't a problem - it's all about old licensing agreements.

I would love to be able to ditch my 360, which I only keep because of a couple of original XBOX games which thankfully were backwards compat for that system.

oh, I agree 100%. It'd be great if it was 100% BC.

That's absolutely not true. Approximately 28% of Xbox 360 games and 4% of original Xbox games are playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X. You think the rest of them are unplayable strictly because of licensing agreements?

Microsoft hasn't come anywhere close to perfectly emulating an Xbox 360 or an original Xbox. A small percentage of game are unplayable due to licensing agreements but the vast majority are unplayable because Microsoft hasn't been able to get them to run at an acceptable level.

Emulation is a very complicated process. Just because the Series X is drastically more powerful than the previous systems doesn't mean it can easily run all of their games.

It also says the list will be updated November 10th. So I assume they're reworking the list to detail Xbox One and Series X|S Optimized titles.

The game that kind of destroyed the official story about the licensing restrictions is Peter Jackson’s King Kong. Ubisoft had apparently lost the license long before it was made available in the last batch of BC titles, and I don’t believe it was ever available digitally. The only way to play it was to buy a used copy. My guess is that they really can put just about anything on there that they want to and that it’s really about giving priority to games that are currently available in their storefront (obviously) and not stepping on the toes of their publisher partners who may be planning on remasters.

Getting Kong up and running didn’t earn them a penny in revenue. Every minute they spent on it was a waste of money. I’d bet money that someone with a lot of pull had a soft spot for the game and said “**** it, I want to play Kong” as the writing was on the wall for the end or at least the hiatus of the whole program. It’s really the only scenario that makes sense.

But something that makes sense as a crazy end-of-days impulse thing doesn’t make sense to do on a regular basis. Microsoft would need several licenses to re-release The Godfather games on Xbox Series X but I don’t believe anything could legally stop them from manufacturing original Xbox or 360 consoles, or a console that was advertised as an Xbox/360/One/Series console. But reluctance to do a charity to people by dumping money into delisted getting games up and running? That is a valid reason not to. I spent every penny I’m ever going to spend on The Godfather games over a decade ago and I can’t expect a business to do me a favor and pay several people to get them to a playable state on my new console.
