Cool Watching 3D Movies on VR (Virtual Reality) Headsets

I'm planning on getting Sony's PSVR and this is something that I have been wondering. I know they will have a virtual cinema mode that makes it look like you are watching movies on a 150" screen. IIRC they stated that 3D movies won't work when it is released, so I am optimistic it is something that is possible.

Any idea if the ones for PC do, or if this is something that is realistic to expect in the future?

No. I don't think so.

The tricky thing here, is that the PSVR screens won't have the 3D tech we see on our 3DTVs and will just be HD screens/screen. So the only way I can imagine this can be stereo 3D, is if it's like a viewmaster that blends both dual 3D cameras into one image to create stereo 3D, if the developer includes a dual rig 3D camera in the game. Chances of getting 3D this round are very, very slim IMO.

Stereo 3D and Virtual Reality are a perfect combination. I hope I'm wrong and there is a way some developer will present 3D with the PSVR and Rift. That would be a huge selling point for me provided there were enough strong 3D games.

It is entirely possible to watch 3-D movies on VR/HMD devices. It's just not a plug-and-play option right now, as far as I can tell. You have to convert a movie into a format that your VR/HMD device can read, either off internal memory or a separate drive. Me, I have been delighted with Google Cardboard, and it's not even the very best option out there.

Yes, it is possible and will more than likely be included. If it isn't added day 1, it will come later. Works great on my Vive.

3D movies also look excellent on my Samsung Gear VR.

Cool. How does it make the stereo 3D effect work with the viewer headset on? Does it combine the screens into two images and then your eyes blend them together? Are there disadvantages? I wonder how it will work with games if that's possible.

I wonder how the software works in this case. I have seen VR headsets in Best Buy, but every one of them is disabled and not working.

It would just play a side by side image in front of your eyes so the left eye looks at the left image and the right eye looks at the right image, no different than a viewmaster. Advantage is no light loss from glasses.

@GrimWillows on Day 1 of PS VR release 3D Blu Ray will be shown in 2D in Cinematic Mode. We will continue to develop it post launch.

I'm cautiously optimistic, from reading that. I just hope it isn't like a two year wait. So excited for VR.

Stay away from VR. It is potentially dangerous to your mental health.

Thanks Dalek. Also stay away from vehicles. They are potentially dangerous, along with TV, radio, video games, movies, etc.

I'm hoping VR does well enough to continue for a few years at least, so 3D could develop as suggested. I still need to see what a PSVR, Rift and other VR device looks like up close in the stores, when I can find one working.

I did see a VR headset on display that shows the ability to walk around in other countries as if a tourist, with a set up much like google earth maps, allowing you to be at ground level and look at the different sights. I'm not sure how the resolution is on that, but currently only 2D.

How so? Articles happen to say the exact opposite of that. Sure it can affect some people, but violent movies and games can affect some people too so the solution isn't stop watching and playing them as a whole.

As if something that's mainly being used for violent videogame VR is going to help in that department.

If they want VR to be a thing, I don't know why they can't use it on safer, non-violent videogames like the LEGO series or Ratchet & Clank.

You're joking right? I mean you need to be to make that statement. Would you like the list of VR games, movies, programs that aren't violent? I bet I can make a considerably longer list than you can.

If someone commits a crime after playing violent VR games they were ALREADY unstable. Games do NOT drive people to commit crimes and again I can provide evidence if you'd like.

This is a completely silly argument.

I agree that it's the user, not the tool that is at fault.

If a person is mentally intact, an immersive video game will not derail them unless they choose to derail themselves by trying to use the video game as an excuse or training tool. Bottomline is, however realistic or violent they may seem, video games are not weapons to harm other people with like a gun or sword would be.

On topic, I'll be more interested in VR once the price drops, the game library grows for a couple years, the technology establishes itself long term and stereo 3D is an option for movies and video games.

Go on then. I doubt you'll be able to find one (certainly not for PSVR). They all appear to be games like Hitman and Call of Duty.

Canada Blu-ray 3D movies using VR headsets

Just noticed that forum member Oniichan lists the HTC Vive as part of his equipment set-up. Can Oniichan, or anyone else, let us know if it is possible to watch Blu-ray 3D content on a VR rig and, if so, what the experience is like?

Thanks

I'm not really keen on watching 3D Blu-ray with a VR headset.
With one exception. Only if this is the only way to watch HFR 3D. Beyond that, I still prefer watching Blu-rays on TV.

My understanding is that there are no current VR headsets capable of playing Blu-ray 3D movies.
Even the Avegent Glyph was originally planed to use the chip, but the plan was thwarted because of R&D costs being too expensive to make the chip small enough to fit in the headset.
MVC decoding is required for full-frame simultaneous HD stereo images.
Side-by-side 3D is present but a capable chip is needed for MVC stream decoding.
