Default Playstation Store Removes Movies And TV Shows On August 31st 2021

Streaming Services Kill Playstation Video. So Stock Up On Your TV Seasons And Movies Now While You Can.

Quote:
At SIE, we strive to provide the best entertainment experience for PlayStation fans, and that means evolving our offerings as customer needs change. We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021.

When this change takes effect, users can still access movie and TV content they have purchased through PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4, PS5 and mobile devices. We thank our fans for their continued support, and we look forward to further enhancing the entertainment experience on PlayStation.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner. Same with Microsoft.

There’s many shows that I enjoy that are not Streaming anywhere and not on Blu-ray or DVD but are on Playstation Video and Microsoft along with iTunes. So like if those shows leave or the service shuts down, there is no way to watch them currently.

Is Sony a part of MA? I believe Microsoft at least has that.

I meant before that I never really saw these two as viable, long term places to have movies/tv purchased.

No pretty sure Sony never supported Movies Anywhere or Ultraviolet for Playstation. It is just watching it on a Playstation system or the Playstation Video App on your phone or tablet.

Microsoft fortunately has the advantage of allowing MA integration.

Yeah, but all they have to do to get out of that is sell Vudu/iTunes integration on their platform..or just the MA app itself.

Then again, I have no idea how much money they make or don't...maybe they make money off it

But Microsoft don’t allow their tv shows that we buy on Xbox to transfer to other streaming apps.

The problem you are looking for is capitalism and the way content is gated off to different platforms. It's annoying and stupid, but that's the way our society works and how the bigwigs make their money. There is a LOT of crap that won't port to MA from other platforms too it's not exclusively their problem. A ton of studios particularly smaller ones only are able to make agreements with certain platforms to sell their stuff.

It is disgustingly anti-customer (I refuse to use the derisive term "consumer" as if we only feed off the refuse of society). This isn't so much a defense of Microsoft but more a critique of the system.

Also I don't think Movies Anywhere even allows TV shows?

So is there any particular exclisives on there worth thinking about? I won;t generally buy digital unless it's cheap, but the PS Store had the advantage of 5.1 support, unlike other streaming sellers.

Yeah I was kinda worried about that too along with if their video was closer to blu-ray quality without all the artifacts.

I really think this is going to suck when all this is gone. Consumers make decisions without knowing what trends and buying habits will do to them, then we end up with ****y services taking over since we enable it.
