Default PS3 used to mimic brain visual processing

http://www.newuniversity.org/showArticle.php?id=6065

Students at UC Irvine and Dartmouth used three PlayStation 3 game consoles to mimic the human brain.

The group focused on the specific brain algorithm for visual processing. Prior to the team’s work, standard processors could not handle the complex computations performed by the brain. But the PS3s, apparently, did the job.

According to one of the students, Jayram Moorkanikara, unlike the Wii and the X-Box, Playstation 3 allows for more practical use in scientific research.

“PS3 contains the IBM CELL processor, whose architecture is suitable for parallel programming and can be used not only for games but for many scientific and multimedia applications. We have also demonstrated that a cluster of these PS3 can behave like a mini supercomputer,” Moorkanikara said.

Hear that, PS3 owners? When you're playing that rubber duck game, you're playing it on a super-computer...or at least a third of a super-computer.
