Sounds interesting.

This should be categorized with all of the threads of Blu-ray on 360.

Any next gen console not having bluray would be pretty dumb. I wouldn't be surprised.

A Wii with digital (HDMI) out for easy integration into my home theater? Sign me the heck up.

I'll send my current Wii to the master bedroom setup.

I wonder how good Nintendo would be about movie firmware updates?

I'd assume they'd do just fine. I have no real reason to think otherwise. I'm not sure if you own a Wii, but they are doing updates to their console pretty regularly. I'm hoping for a gigabit NIC in this upcoming version as well, as opposed to wireless.

Two very differnt things though. (ps: the wii isn't powerfull enough to play a blu-ray movie disc from what I understand). Honestly, we will be waiting untill the next console generation before blu-ray to be on more then just the ps3 (reffering to game systems). Though nintendo will probably be cheap again and continue to use sd graphics.

Not that I care about using any console to play movies, but I'd hope they do better with updates than they've done at adding channels to the menu. There's multiple pages open for channles to be added, yet we haven't seen one available since launch (or shortly thereafter). But yes, they have been pretty good with console updates so far.

I know what you mean, but I guess it all depends on how you look at it. The channel slots on the menu are there for VC/WiiWare games as much as they are there for non-game channels. Additionally, some disc-based games come with an optional "channel" to install (MarioKart and WiiFit/WiiFit+ come to mind).

I've never bought a WiiWare title, so I was unaware of that. I'm just not that into playing (most types of) games with the Wii controller, so my Wii purchases have been pretty limited. I must say, I'm thinking about that Monkey Island series that's out (or was that 360?). I have Mario Kart, but I only played it once, just to check it out (steering a wheel in mid-air just isn't for me), so I guess I completely missed the channel. I'll have to check it out again.

As for the OP, I don't put a whole lot of stock in the rumor. I do expect the next Nintendo console to support HD graphics, however, I think the jury is out on what the game medium will be. Nintendo has twice passed on the opportunity to use standard DVD as their game medium and has instead opted for a similarly-flavored proprietary disc format. I think it's possible that they may license some form of Blu-ray disc technology to establish another proprietary disc format, if allowed. I will be very surprised if it ends up being vanilla Blu-ray disc with the console supporting movie playback.

But hey, they may surprise me and prove all of my speculation very wrong.

I will say, original NES games from the VC work great with the WiiMote held sideways and SNES games are very nice with the Classic Controller.

Also, you may know this, but you don't have to play MarioKart with the WiiWheel. You can use the Wiimote and Nunchuck or even just the Classic Controller if that's more your style. Lots of long-time Kart fans prefer the Classic Controller because it's closest to what they're used to, but I actually really enjoy the arcade feel of using the WiiWheel (despite having less precise control).

I thought there was a Gamecube-type controller out for the Wii... Will that work with Wii ttiles? All the buttons are basically there, just arranged differently.

Updating a console for the game side, and for the blu-ray movie side.

Well, there's the aforementioned Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro. It doesn't work with all Wii titles, but it does work with Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and some others. It also works with all Virtual Console games.

You can also plug an actual Gamecube controller into the Wii and use it on games that work with the Classic Controller, I believe.

Ah. Thanks for clearing that up. Well you may be right. I would like to think that if they're going to actually go with Blu-ray for their format of choice for the upcoming console, the hardware they put in there would be able to output full HD signal — both for games and movies. I really have no idea, though. My main concern and what I'm most excited to see is just the fact that it'll have a more modern connectivity scheme with HDMI. It'll be so much easier to integrate into my home theater setups than it is with component cables.

I made a mention of this another thread (or maybe earlier in this one ) that it kind of bugs me that you can't really master the game by using the wheel. You can only go so far before you've reached the best you're going to get with a wheel, and then there's a whole 'nother level of skill you can attain when you switch it over to the Classic Controller or Wii remote/nunchuck combo. I've pretty much maxed out my wheel skill level and have been contemplating switching it up and going with the Classic Controller. Fortunately, Rock Band 2 has been keeping my video game needs fulfilled over on the 360.

Yeah, I realize that. But I did see a Wii specific Gamecube controller clone at Best Buy one day a few months back. I had it in my hand ready to purchase, but puit it back, wondering if it would actually replace the Wii controller. I have a classic controller, but haven't used it yet, as the cord is too short to reach the sofa. Besides, all the games we own are actually suited to the Wii controller, except for Mario Kart (which I only played once). To be honest, the only Wii game I played to death was The Sims Castaway, which I pretty much played every day all last fall & winter. That worked well with the Wii controller, probably because Sims games work well with a mouse (which the Wii controller replaces nicely).
