Ways to Watch a 3D Blu-ray Without a 3D TV

I am sure there is going to be alot of detractors after reading this and thats ok because peoples opions are good and this is what makes this site interesting at times. So here it goes. Last night while watcingh ShopMSNBC something came on that interested me greatly and something I saw coming awhile ago. Its called the 3D Video Wizard Converter. What it essentially does is convert your standard 2D tv into a 3D tv with the simple hookup of an HDMI cable. It has 2 HDMI ports and can be used with the PS3, any 3D Blu ray player or cable/Sat Box that transmits 3D. It also comes with 6 pairs of 3D glasses. It goes for $100 on shopmsnbc or you can find them on Amazon and Ebay for less. It has more features and you can look them up online. From what I have been reading the reviews seem to be pretty good and people seem to like it. I know my fiance and I are going to give it a try. I always said that if some manufacturer could come out with something that I could hook up to my tv to view 3D then hey I am all for it. Now that dont change my feelings about 3D being alot of hype but we would enjoy a 3D movie every now and then but not enough to go out and spend money on a new set just to watch a 3D movie. This is what I have been looking for. My freinds going to get one first so I will see if it will be worth it and if it is then I will have just turned my 2D Sony into a 3D tv with the addition of a simple converter. I just wanted to pass this along for people who may want to know and are interested. I know there are going to be detracters, or however you spell it, and people that are going to say 'oh thats going to look terrible' and so on but oh well. We all have our opinions but if it looks good to me when my freind gets one then I am all in.

Just out of curiosity, does it take direct 3D signals from a 3D source and show them, or does it just convert anything from 2D to 3D?

Its not going to look terrible, no its not going to be what 3D looks like with your new high end sets and maybe not as good but at least it will save me money on having to go out and waste money on a new HDTV for something that has never thrilled me anyway.

This is a pretty neat little gadget, it actually takes the left and right supplied 3d images from actual 3d content and displays them old school which is enough for some, I would have jumped on this years ago had it been around (or had I found it) while I was working towards getting my 3dTV - 100 bucks to view real content and not a crappy 2d-3d converter, awesome.

You definitely won't get the experience you would with an actual 3dTV but you should most definitely get some good visuals, unfortunately you'll probably get some really bad ghosting as well as a side effect because of the viewing method. Anyhow, Please answer back if you end up buying this and tell us your thoughts - I'm curious!

I will be picking this up for sure but right now I am waiting on my S790 Blu ray player. But I will give my thoughts on it for sure trust me on that. I'm not a huge 3D fan thats why I have yet to get a 3D tv and dont plan on doing so anytime soon. But I am sure this will work just fine.

With regards the 2D/3D converters, in my experience, they are a waste of time. The difference between an automatically converted 2D image and really good 3D is night and day. Also, this displays in anaglyph format which causes eyestrain and discoloration and is the old method of viewing 3D.

If you are happy to watch in anaglyph though, why not just buy the 3D anaglyph versions of 3D movies and save yourself some money? As well as some anaglyph Blu-rays, there are also a few Blu-ray 3ds that include the anaglyph versions in the Blu-ray 3D package....these movies include Animals United, Sammy's Adventure. These will play in 3D on any display and you'd also have the Blu-ray 3D versions if you ever decide to upgrade to a 3D TV later on. Also, there are loads of other Blu-rays and DVDs that you can buy using the same anaglyph 3D method as this system does. You could probably buy 10-20 proper 3D movies in anaglyph format for the same price that this would cost you and judging by the reviews....this doesn't work very well. I know which option I would choose.

I got this device in the other day. I have a 3D television, but wanted to get one so my family could enjoy 3D. Frame packed 3D looked good, but it had one fatal flaw. The amber lens would not pull both images close enough together to eliminate the double image completely. Everything pushed back in the screen looked good, but once it got close to the screen it split. It is a good idea, but it does not work well enough to justify purchase. If you Want to see a double image at all times, get it.

ok this is fairly straightforward and I have no clue if it has been talked about with this particular device but here goes nothing.

Ok so you have lets say you have purchased Titanic 3D and a 3D capable blu-ray player as an example I will use my own which is the Sony BDP S590

What you need is

• Any 2D HDTV with HDMI ofcourse
  
• 3D Blu-ray Player
  
• 3D Video Wizard Console.

1. First go to the Display, BD or Video Settings of your 3D Blu-Ray player
   
2. Once your there make sure Video Resolution is set to Auto so it can choose the best RES for when the 3D Video Wizard is hooked.
   
3. Then Disable 24p or 24hz for BD
   
4. Turn off your 3D Player
   
5. Ok setup your 3D video wizard as per the instructions included.(you should know how to set it up if you own it.)
   
6. Make sure you have the latest Firmware on your 3D Video Wizard

8. Turn on your 3D Player and wait for the 3D Video Wizard to react, if it switches source back and forth or it does not react just press the Source button on your remote a couple of times, the Picture will come up eventually
   
9. Once setup and you see your 3D players screen simply load up your 3D Blu-Ray Disc and the 3D video wizard will adjust itself to the 3D type.
   
10. If you have movies that Disable 2D viewing from 3D disc(Disney, Titanic 3D(Open Matte!) and it loads up then youll know it worked.
    
11. Now either enjoy the movie with the amber/blue glasses OR this is where it gets cool
    
12. hit MENU on the 3D Video wizard and then Hit MODE here you will see 2 Options
    
13. 3D FP to 3D
14. 3D to 2D
    
15. Select 3D ----> 2D and Vuola!

Enjoy your 3D Blu-Ray on your 2D HDTV(Titanic Open Matte looks amazing in 2D IMO and no it wont look washed out or anything when you turn the 3D to 2D)

The 2D version is 2:35:1
The 3D is 16:9 1.78:1


Any questions just ask, just trying to help those that dont have 3d tvs but do have that device and a 2D HDTV

Ill try to put up pics of the menus and what not if need be.

Thanks for the info but wouldnt it be just better to save up and buy a 3D HDTV? That way your getting a true 3D signal the way it was meant to be seen. Just sayin.

To each his own. I did this to enjoy the open matte aspect ratio in titanic 3d in non headache 3d(i can't watch 3d for that long). So whoever has use for this info great. If not I shared a bit of my experience.

That's very interesting.

I can't imagine it worth the $60 and the setup just to see the lower half of that cubby chicks butt but still.

If you have a projector (like I do) and you can handle anaglyph (which is pretty aweful compared to the newer 3D tech but the glasses can be under $1), then this works for all 3D Blu playback.

I'm nearly interested... I can pick up plastic anaglyph glasses cheap and have lots of glasses for 3D movies in my HT.

Edit- I use a 3D VIP 3D displayer to watch 3D blus on my non 3D projector which costs more but it has the actual shutter glasses and doesn't give you color changes like the anaglyph stuff. With that you could also turn off the 3D and watch the 3D version in 2D but ... it costs more. But,... it gives you more too because you can watch 3D Blus somewhat correctly.

Hey DJ I didnt mean for the way it sounded so I am sorry. I seriously did look into buying this but thats a moot point now that my LED/3D tv is arriving today. But its a good tool for those who dont want to go out and upgrade to a new tv. So thanks for the info you posted, it does come in handy for those looking into buying it.

Sounds interesting, and I was almost sold until I read that it uses anaglyph 3D and you're looking through red and blue filters. Unless I'm missing something? Is everything red/blue like those old paper glasses, or is there still a good amount of the color of the original source with the glasses on?

If anyone here wants to watch Blu-ray 3D movies converted to anaglyph on their existing 2D set-up, I have another method too. If you got the right stuff.

You need;
Some sort of display (telle, projector, monitor, h*ll, an old CRT will do...)
PC with Blu-ray drive
A decent graphics card, not amazing, but decent. For nVidia you need at least a 240.
Cyberlink PowerDVD from ver. 11 Ultra and up, but if it's 11, makes sure it's 11 Ultra
Anaglyph glasses (cheap as dirt on Amazon, or pick up an old movie that comes with 'em!)

Plug the computer to the telle. Open the program. Locate the 3D option, and set the output to anaglyph. Only red/cyan is supported on 11 Ultra, but I don't know if the purple/green ones work with ver. 12 (I prefer these colors for anaglyph, distracts me less, but that's probably just me).

Now whack in the movie you wanna watch and sit back and enjoy in wonderful 3D anaglyph amazement!
