I've been putting this off for years. But since I'm going to D.C. in a couple of weeks, so I though I would finally buy a camera. I will be using it for general purpose--vacation, indoor, outdoor--so I don't need anything professional grade. I don't think I need anything more than 10MP. Lastly, I don't want to spend more than $175 or so.
Amazon has the Canon Powershot A1000IS for $150 and the Canon PowerShot SD890IS for $170. These both seem to be pretty good cameras. I've played around with the Canon A1100IS in Best Buy and prefer the user interface over a waterproof Olympus model I was looking at before. So, any suggestions? |

Well if you looking a nice point and shoot and around $175 is would Canon SD1200IS but if you are looking to spend a little more, you can find sweet on the Canon SD880IS...... Canon user interface is the most friendly user, I have ever use even on Canon 30D and XT and SD880IS....

Although I am a Nikon man, I think the Canon P&S cameras are better than the Nikon counterparts.
My wife has a Nikon L18, which we got for about $90. It does a good job, but I have seen some Canons do a far better job, especially in the range you are looking for. If you want to go balls out, then look at the Canon G10 ($500). Although at that price, many would say jump into the DSLR. |

I say Panasonic makes the best P&S cameras. And I am a user of Canon and Nikon DSLRs. Sorry, but both are big let downs on their P&S and rely on their name to sell them. They put all their efforts in to DSLRs and lenses. And so they should.

In comparing price to features there appears to be a lot of good options. Canon, Sony, Fuji, Kodak, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, etc. However, when playing around with them at Best Buy the Canon seemed to be the most user-friendly, intuitively-designed among them.
I was serious about the Canon SD1200, but CNET seems to like the Sony DSC-W290. It has 5x optical zoom (vs. 3x) and ranges from 28-140mm (vs. 35-105mm), so I'm leaning in that direction now. On Bing.com it's just under $200 after 3% cash back. I found the Canon on Dell.com for $170. What are some good sites on which to do some price comparisons? Who's cheap and reliable? Sony, Panasonic or Canon are the three I'd go with, depending on what you are looking for. You may be able to find a Panasonic TZ5 in that price range now, which is a great 10MP 10x zoom P&S.

I have the 590IS (the older 8MP version of the newer A1100IS - 12MP), and it is no wonder this thing has won so many awards in its price range.
Excellent camera (specially for a beginner that wants to explore more later), with plenty of manual settings. Weirdly enough, the 590IS now sells for $300 on Amazon (I guess the stock is getting low?) O.o Paid $100 at Newegg for it last year. |
