I finally feel like, between what's already out there and what's in the pipeline, I am ready to go ahead and pretty much start collecting movies now almost entirely on Blu-ray disc (BD), and cut way back on collecting any more DVDs. One positive sign for me, as I'm already a member with them, is that Columbia House now sells BDs. I would love to hear from others out there who are at the stage I'm at right now as far as also making the transition to BDs. Finally, I'm obviously not going to unload everything at once (and I'm talking a few hundred+ titles), but I would appreciate your thoughts on how others of you are letting go of the DVDs in your collections once you upgrade to something on BD. On a related topic, how have your experiences been with the BD players out there that upconvert DVDs to 1080p? Thanks...

![]() For getting rid of DVD's E-Bay is your friend. It's been a while, but they used to offer .25c listings once in a while. Throw a bunch of movies up and see what happens. Put a $3 reserve and figure the shipping and add a buck for "handling". You'll at least make $4 apiece. As far as upconverting my PS3 does a fantastic job. |

As far as completely switching over, well, it makes no sense to buy the DVD version when the Blu-ray version is out or most likely will be out soon. But if you have tastes for foreign movies or obscure movies then it might be a long wait before they make it to Blu-ray then you may want to buy the DVD if you really want to own it. At the moment I find no point to buy new DVDs as I have such a huge backlog of movies to watch that adding more DVDs into the mix just puts another one into a pile that I may not get through. So now I will just purchase Blu-rays moving forward and rent DVD's that I want to watch. |

My only "complaint" about BD, in terms of collecting titles, is that I'm a huge fan of the old (mainly black and white) classics from the 30s and 40s (Bogart, Cagney, Warner Bros, RKO, MGM. My favorite cable channel, and the one I watch the most, by far, is definitely Turner Classic Movies). Those are the titles that are coming out at a crawl, though I understand why: The studios want to "showcase" and get their investment back on the newest titles. So, I know my "old classics" DVDs will continue to be an important part of my collection for a long time to come...

DVD was the same way, a lot of older films were very slow to come out when it started. But almost everything is out on DVD these days and hopefully it will be the same for Blu-ray. But I am guessing it may be years before I see Gummo or Julian-Donkey Boy on Blu, if they ever make it. But then, I can remember saying the same thing about some titles on DVD at the time. |
