The cheapest route for BD region free ability?

Go online (Ebay) and get a refurbished Insignia BD player.

I got one for $31.00 and it's region free (DVD & BD) outta the box after entering a simple 4 digit code.

(Insignia NS-BRDVD4 1080p HD Internet Connectable Blu-Ray Player)

Ebay has several that start at $44.00

You may be able to find them cheaper elsewhere.

Has anyone discovered how to bypass the DVD region codes on this, personally do not need it as I have an older oppo dvd player and well as the BDP 93 so I am all set, but it would be nice to have another region free DVD player as well.
Nothing will work, as the Panasonic does not have a NTSC/PAL converter.

I have a question on topic, at this point hypothetical! I am learning Japanese. Lots of reasons I want to do that. At some point suppose hypothetically I might go to Japan, maybe even for a long period. I have a large movie collection! Everything from American Movies, Japanese imports, and American releases on both Blu ray and DVD. The blu rays have no problem, we share Region A with Japan, but the difference in region tells me my DVDs won't work.

I am fortunate to have so much in the blu ray format, but there are a few DVDs that would cost a fortune to replace with the Japanese blu ray. My head tells me there must be a solution to the region code conflict for DVDs worth saving. These have not only been to the benefit of entertainment, but also helped to practice my Japanese.

So my question in short: I already have a large collection, I have heard of region free players and voltage adapters, Does a player already region free need a voltage adapter. What exactly does someone need?

Thanks!

It depends on the player, some can handle different inputs. I'd suggest a cheap player that can be hacked through the remote. Depending on the equipment some US electrical goods will work fine in Japan as they share the same outlets but have different voltage (100 vs. 120). Bizarrely there's also different electric current between regions (50hz vs. 60hz) and depending on the building some sockets can be non-polarized vs. polarized.

The best thing to do would be source a player in Japan that can be hacked (if they're not too expensive) just to watch your US DVDs there. I think there are a few members here that live in Japan but are from the US and they'd be able to give more in-depth advice.

Method 1 -

- Insert a disc and wait for the "Wrong Region" screen to appear
- Press the "Pop-Up Menu" button
- Disc should boot to the discs main menu or start playing the movie

Method 2 -

- Insert a disc and wait for the "Wrong Region" screen to appear
- Press Stop
- Press the "Pop-Up Menu" button (You may have to press this a few times)
- Disc should boot to the discs main menu or start playing the movie

Method 3 -

- Insert a disc and wait for the "Wrong Region" screen to appear
- Press Stop
- Press 1 and the number "1" should start blinking in the upper right corner. Press the "OK" button while 1 is blinking. You may have to try this a few times, as it usually doesn't work the first time. Try pressing OK on the first or second blink and it should work.
- Disc should boot to the discs main menu or start playing the movie
Does this trick still work? Is it only on certain models? Have newer firmware updates stopped it? I only have a couple Region-B discs, and I was hoping to just buy a Panasonic player and use the trick. Any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Method #3 works with my BDT310 (region A), but not for all BD region B (ex: didn't work for Time Bandits & Edward Scissorhands , from Zavvi). I ended up buying a modified Sony S5100, last week, for 209$ CAN, shipped.

Good Luck!

Chris

Thanks for the tips! Unfortunately they did not work on my pan you for a network region 2 blu Ray. Is there any other hacks or ways around the region coding? Feel free to pm me too. Thanks!

Default pal wont work on 220

I'm trying to play a pal dvd in the Panasonic bdt220 bluray player and ,It just says "can not play" I do not get a menu choice so i can hit pop up video .Is it not working because it says PAL on it , How are other people getting the remote to change to region b ?

PAL =/= Region B. They're two separate things. This trick is strictly for bypassing the Region coding of a disc.
