My order from Hamilton Books arrived. Curious to fire up the Pretty Peaches Trilogy, but I'm really curious about Nosferatu in Venice.

Arclight Cinemas And Pacific Theatres Won’t Be Reopening; Parent Company Decurion Hands Keys Back To Landlords

Quote:
Decurion’s crown jewel is the Hollywood Arclight multiplex on Sunset Boulevard and its 58-year old Cinerama Dome, which made a big cameo in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and remains many filmmakers’ favorite venue. The Hollywood Arclight is also one of the highest-grossing movie theaters in the nation; again, a huge blow to the industry and the L.A. market, which is in its fourth week of a robust reopening.

Here’s Decurion’s statement:

After shutting our doors more than a year ago, today we must share the difficult and sad news that Pacific will not be reopening its ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres locations.

This was not the outcome anyone wanted, but despite a huge effort that exhausted all potential options, the company does not have a viable way forward.

To all the Pacific and ArcLight employees who have devoted their professional lives to making our theaters the very best places in the world to see movies: we are grateful for your service and your dedication to our customers.

To our guests and members of the film industry who have made going to the movies such a magical experience over the years: our deepest thanks. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve you.

Been going to the ArcLight Cinemas for years.

Default Logitech discontinues its popular universal Harmony Remotes!

Logitech Remote is getting out of this business, says that Streaming is one of the main reasons. I never liked Universal Remotes too much hassle. I have always used the Remote for the Device I was using.

Quote:
But with the rise of streaming services over the past few years, universal remotes are no longer as crucial as they once were. Logitech CEO Bracken Darrell told The Verge in 2019 that Harmony was a small business for the company; he said the remote business was only about 6 percent of the size of Logitech’s massive keyboard business, for instance.

I don’t think you will be disappointed, the first film in particular is strong with a stunning lead. A/V is as strong as can be expected with a natural looking grain. (All 3 films are shot on film)

Thst article doesn’t mention streaming. It will be a reason no doubt but no mention of it there.

Another casualty of the drop to inferior quality that is streaming.

Apple plans to combine ATV4K with a soundbar. That’s not something I would use even though I love my ATV4K and my original HomePod.

I hope there is a new ATV without speakers and camera. Also hope it’s somehow improved.

I use the HomePod in my kitchen dining room area. If I still lived in a one room
Apartment I guess I could be interested. It could be good for dorms but I think headphones is better for dorms usually.

Apple event 4/20

I would expect that we will see a regular Apple TV box before this combined effort. Probably a year away at least would be my guess.

Does anyone have the Roku soundbar? What does this sound like compared to a more expensive one in the $250-300 price range?

There was some thoughts of incorporating HomePod features into a ATV but as you stated none of us want to have our ATV on 24/7 with speakers or camera. Likely the next model is a faster A14 processor based, along with 4K 120hz support for Gaming, along with more memory. The event symbol looks like a “E” signifying a slant towards the educational sector. It’s multicolor also which implies products that tend to come in different colors. Don’t be too surprised if it’s constrained event as June 7th WWDC is closer.

Is this the rebranded Smart Soundbar now marketed as Streambar Pro? I guess its ideally suited for minimal audio quality (less any bass) with Roku built in. Given there are a lot of small flat panel TV's with tiny speakers its a step up for those.

Oh, and got my second dose of the COVID vaccine and that one has hit like a mini-brick. My arm is sore and I got a bit of chills or fever. I knocked out for 2 hours earlier today. I heard it is expected.

Yep, I’m sure you will be fine in a couple of days. Those symptoms are pretty typical of the side effects some of my friends have had.

How the Cinerama Dome Became a Hollywood Landmark - Hollywood Reporter 4/14/21

Quote:
Monday's announcement that the historic Cinerama Dome in Hollywood — in addition to ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres' additional 15 locations — has closed for good due to unrecoverable pandemic-year losses resulted in an outpouring of tributes from dejected filmmakers and cinephiles for reasons that are justifiable.

The 70-foot-high concrete geodesic dome, which sits prominently on Sunset Boulevard near the intersection of Vine Street, is a landmark and recognizable symbol of Hollywood's motion picture industry, even appearing in films such as Quentin Tarantino's '60s set Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Constructed in 1963 by Pacific Theatres parent company the Decurion Corp. and designed by Welton Becket & Associates — also the architect of the Beverly Wilshire and Beverly Hilton hotels — the one-of-a-kind structure was built to house what was then a new widescreen Cinerama system, which employed a 70mm single-projector process of displaying images on a huge curved screen (rather than the original Cinerama system that used three synchronized projectors). The Dome opened Nov. 7, 1963, with the world premiere of Stanley Kramer's It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

In its early years, the Dome also hosted events such as the world premiere of Battle of the Bulge and the West Coast premiere of The Greatest Story Ever Told, both in 1965.

In 1998, the Dome was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and was reconstructed in the early 2000s as part of the Arclight Hollywood complex (while including the ability to show films in three-strip Cinerama).

The Dome was closed from 2000-02 during the construction of the adjoining ArcLight Hollywood complex, which, when it opened, quickly became a favorite haunt of filmmakers, industry executives and the moviegoing public. The ArcLight brand put a premium on customer service — ushers introduced each screening — along with sterling sound, upscale food and in later years, a full-service bar.

The Dome has always kept up with technical advancements, while also compensating for challenges to the visuals and sound acoustics presented by its size and shape. In 2005, when film projection was still the dominant format in cinemas, the Dome added digital projection to its film capabilities, just in time to unspool George Lucas' Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in the digital format. It also added digital 3D capabilities early on, unwrapping this new offing with James Cameron's groundbreaking Avatar in 2009.

In December 2015, it took an early leap into laser projection, installing Christie projection technology accompanied by Dolby 3D, just in time for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

A year later, it temporarily housed a new configuration in order to introduce Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk in the director's experimental format of 4K, 3D at a high frame rate of 120 frames per second, per eye.

No one is clear as to what happens next in terms of the landmark site. Decurion owns the land under the Dome, but not the adjoining multiplex. Already, there's speculation that Decurion might partner with someone and keep the locale going or sell it to a third party (a transaction complicated by the Dome's historic landmark status).
We had the early 1960's century theaters in San Jose, Ca, that were similar, but historic or not they were torn down as a example of ineffective space utilization for land use.

What sucks about the Cinerama Dome closing down is that there really isn't anything else to do on that stretch of Sunset Blvd. anymore. Amoeba Records is no longer there on the corner. All you have left are a few eateries.

F9 looks stupid as hell. I will definitely be seeing it in my local Dolby Cinema theater. Army of the Dead is also getting a theatrical release, but I will wait and see if it gets a DC release. If not, then Netflix is fine for me.

I was in Colombia last week. I didn't take my laptop or streaming devices. So I watched 2 Netflix movies and 2 episodes of Falcon and Winter Soldier on my phone. Just for Steedeel.

I don't really know anything about this place, but with the picture you posted, I recognized it. I remember seeing pics of it with Minions on top and I think I seen Spider-Man on it too years ago. That sucks, it looks like a cool place.

Unfortunately we are coming to the end of the physical media cycle with more and more streaming and shows and movies made exclusively for the streaming service it's all about subscriptions. Also the blu rays that do come out I wonder if they will stop giving digital codes now. They don't want you to own the movies or shows any more they want you to pay for their service every month.
