Looks beautiful as I expected. And before anyone starts to cry teal, remember that florescent lighting gives off a green colour temperature.

I think there's a bit too much compression judging by those caps.

It's a compressed JPG, of course it's going to be "bit too much". Then again, Criterion have had some trouble with compression in the past.

Over the years having watched this many, many times, my takeaway has always been the strength of the performance as the primary focus. Then the subversive way it was edited. I never gave much thought to the cinematography, as much of it seemed rough, shoestring and avante garde.

Just soaking in this screencaps, this is a revelation. I'm noticing just how many different styles of cinematography are on display here. This has turned from a "not sure how much better you can polish this," to "potential release of the year."

It looks like Criterion went again to "TEAL Country" with the new master like it did with Scanners, Thief and Fantastic Planet.

Check for yourself

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCom...oy_blu-ray.htm

I just canceled my Pre-Order

What a shame!!!

Kind regards,

I mean, he's not wrong. Criterion can be called out if people have concerns, they aren't infallible. I bought Thief without knowing about the tealing, wish I had known.

I don't see "teal country" at all in any of those shots, just a green hue in certain indoor sequences due to the lighting.

Have you looked at the review and accompanying screenshots on this site?

People should learn the difference between licensing and restoring. Criterion had no part in the restoration for this. They merely licensed an existing restoration from MGM. I think the transfer looks fine.

Okay, and...? Your verdict on those?

You're free to do what you want of course, but I think you'll be missing out on a great release particularly if you're relying on Gary Tooze's opinion.

You are right about the difference between licensing and restoring. In my opinion the new master looks very green/blue teal. Of course, only the actual viewing of the disc will give me the complete assessment. I will rent the disc and compare it to my MGM blu-ray

Thank you.

Kind regards,

Judging by the DVD Beaver caps, the new master has been heavily tealed. The MGM maybe less sharp, but it's a much more natural looking transfer. And it's not just the interiors that are affected. Look at the skies (teal vs blue). If people like the new master, that's fine, but calling other people out for being critical of it isn't on.

MGM

Criterion
