Default Help! BestBuy wants to replace my noisy 80GB PS3 with a 40GB PS3 for free...(no SACD)

All of my three PS3s are the 80GB model, all purchased from BestBuy and
all have the BestBuy 2-year replacement policy.

One of the PS3s recently started to become very, very noisy. It sits
inside a glass cabinet, 18 feet away from the couch, yet I can hear this
noisy fan.

I took it to BestBuy and GeekSquad guy just said "we'll replace it... go to
the back(video game section) and get another one..." The only problem
is that they no longer have the 80GB version.... I do not care about the
40GB hard drive size, since I store stuff on the external 1TB drive. I don't
have any PS2 games... and two USB ports are plenty for me.

The biggest and only problem is that the 40GB PS3 does not play SACD.
My PS3s are used more for SACD than Blu-ray. In fact, I own almost
210 SACD discs, compared to my tiny collection of only 80 Blu-ray movies.
(so SACD is very important to me)

What do I do now....? The GeekSquad guy was helpful and said maybe
I should wait for a few months to see if a new SACD-capable PS3 will show
up....(still have 8 months left on the replacement plan)

Any advice appreciated!

its your call man. no one can make up your mind. but to me its obvious sony is taking more and more out of the ps3 to make it cheaper to the consumer to spread adoption. so you might not come across one.

will it have SACD capability? If so, I do not mind waiting... (assuming that
BestBuy will carry it)

Thanks!

I don't know anything about SACD, I just know the new 80gig unit will arrive this summer.

I believe the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle coming out in June is 80Gig? It also comes with the new Dual Shock3 controller. I would talk to the manager and have them set it aside for you when it comes in. If the fan is tolerable I would wait for this bundle which is $400 also. Make sure that the PS3 is getting enough air flow, if the unit gets too hot then the fan kicks into High speed and yes it is very loud. There was a previous thread that addresses the noisy fan issues on PS3 (Primarily 60gb models).

they should give you a gift card and make up the diff in price... they did that for our friends 360, he bought the more expensive one and it broke so they gave him a credit of 400 so he was able to get the dirt cheap one for 250 and spend the rest in the store

Yeah if it were me, I'd either get the 40GB now and ask for the price difference or just wait until summer for the MGS4 bundle.

Since you have a total of 3 PS3s, I'd wait until summer because then the upgrade would include a DS3 controller and not to mention MGS4 for "free" for your trouble. Seems like a pretty good choice IMO.

Have you tried swapping it out with one of your other ps3's to see if the fan goes on overdrive with them also?
I used to have mine in a glass cabinet also until I realized it was very warm in the cabinet, even with the doors open and thats why the fan would step up.
Its a living beast and needs room to breath. My ps3 sits proud on top of the entertainment cabinet and the fan hardly ever goes into high speed.

I don't think so, but I do not see a reason why they would change it either.

Afterall, it still cost the same as the previous 80 gig. Only this time you get a FREE dual shock 3 controller, and an MGS4 game, 60 bucks worth right there, pack in this bundle for FREE.

At 499, this new 80 gig should have the same spec as the previous 80 gig.

Take the rain check and wait for the new 80GB unit. The only 'new' thing about it is probably the title that comes bundled with it. Other than that it should have the same specs and typenumber.

Not much of any options.
a) Wait till the next 80GB comes out (supposedly the MGS bundle.)
b) Trade in for the 40gb + Store credit that makes up the $100 difference
c) Find another option for repair (like Sony)
d) Sell (like on Ebay)

Don't ever switch it out at the store. Mail it in like the plan requires you to. This way you will get a gift card for FULL PRICE of what you paid for plus tax. That way you come out ahead...if you buy another model that is cheaper than what you paid and/or have other bundeled in items that weren't with it originally.

This too disturbs me. While I have a secondary stand-alone SACD/DVD-A player, I use the SACD capability of my 60GB PS3.

I'll be pretty damn pissed if Sony drops it from all models. Too many SACDs in my music collection!
