Default Stores releasing/delivering movies early/before release date

Sorry for this if itís in the wrong place, so I regularly see posts of movies either delivered from online stores a day or 2 early or put on shelves the day before release date.

How common is this?

Iím flying into NYC and will be there till September 9.

Anywhere Iíll be able to pick up John Wick 3 4k movie before flying out?

The movie releases September 10, but any chance I can order online for hotel delivery or pickup in Manhattan before release date?

I used to find stuff early in the porn shops on 45th street and 8th avenue but that was a few years ago - I think that area has been gentrified now. You're not going to find physical stores that put stuff out early these days - most are gone. Best Buy doesn't stock shelves early. You're lucky if you find new titles out on street date. I've been really impressed with Best Buy online, though. They ship a few days before street date, presumably so your order arrives on time. I think they're trying to compete with Amazon Prime and they're doing a great job so far. My copy of Apocalypse Now 4K was out for delivery on Saturday. Never got it but that's still 2 days before street date (not counting Sunday).

Probably will get moved to the Retail section, but it's exceptionally rare to have a B&M store put stock out early b/c there are potentially severe financial penalties and distributor repercussions if they get caught. Some smaller independent store can sometimes get away with it, but I'm not sure if there is a NYC store that is reliable enough for that.

Delivery prior to street date is more common, but exceptionally hard to predict which retailer and which item will make it early. For every item I get on Monday and very rarely Saturday ahead of time, there is another item from the same source that comes on Tuesday (or later)

Amazon has gotten where even release day Prime deliveries are more of a suggestion than guaranteed.

If it’s a toss-up between amazon prime or BB for delivery who would you chance it with?

FWIW, Iíve never once had Amazon deliver anything early. However, my BB preorders routinely arrive the Monday before the release date.

For major studio new releases? Not very common, nor is it very likely, particularly with major chain retailers.

When it comes to boutique label releases of older movies like Arrow Video or Kino Lorber, etc. you'll see some places selling them early and the companies involved are not likely to kick up a fuss.

Best Buy shipped Avengers: Endgame to me less than a week before street date. I got it on the Saturday before (which was 4 days ahead of schedule).

I know video games get real tight reins for upholding hard street dates. The Halo series was notorious with the second game.

That's promising news, thanks.

The feedback I'm getting suggests that Best Buy will ship so that there's a good chance it'll arrive early.

I'm hopeful if it doesn't deliver Saturday, I should get it by Monday. I fly out from JFK in the evening so have a good chance of still being around even if it delivers late Monday....
