Speaking as a long-time Barnes & Noble customer, they weren't very aggressive with sales during the Christmas season. Especially compared to previous years.

It's no wonder their sales went down year-over-year.

Right next to Toys R Us I'm surprised they are still open, but at least TRU allows price matching. The only thing Barnes & Noble has is that they are more or less the last remaining book store, which is what GameStop has going for them too.

FYE, GameStop, B&N... can't believe stores still exist that don't price match and sell using MSRP (outside of FYE on some sales). My local FYE shut down last month and even at 50% off MSRP you could still get most titles cheaper on Amazon.

Hell B&N won't even price match their own website prices!

Here's a write-up from TechCrunch on the layoffs: https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/16/ba...illing-itself/

I've grown as tired as anyone of the "when will BN go under?" speculation, but this really seems like a move of desperation.

A little OT but I saw an Amazon bookstore for the first time the other day. I didn't know these were a thing yet. I kind of like how they had the books displayed but I didn't check prices so not sure how much better they are (price-wise) than B&N.

The thing with Barnes & Noble is their locations are usually in prime retail shopping locations demanding higher rents and huge overhead costs. Each store has a lot of space, which was fine when the book and media markets were healthier.

I've been very surprised they haven't tried bringing in some completely different lines of merchandise in self-contained sections. Something like perfumes or smartphones. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I saw the article on TechCrunch today. Reminded me to use up the value left on my gift cards and promo credits ASAP. I don't think they've reached the end quite yet, but the layoffs (all FT employees at most stores) could be the first throes of the end...

If they would start price-matching, they would be in a better spot.

I go to Barnes and Noble regularly..... to read books not buy them. Just can't bring myself to pay full price for 10-20 year old merchandise.

Except for the Arrow sale that comes up every once in a while, and maybe a few Criterions during that sale, I don’t do that much business with BN anymore, the 40% off sale being the exception. When they stopped allowing coupons on Criterions, I cut way back on my purchases during the sales. I was buying 15-25 titles during a sale as I was catching up on back releases, but in the most recent sale, I bought 4. I hope they hang around though because the 40% off sales are decent.

While this move likely does spell their eventual end, in the short term it will allow Barnes & Noble to hang around longer.

The book publishers want the chain to remain viable as competition for Amazon. Barnes & Noble going out of business would have negative repercussions for the entire publishing industry.

A while back I said Barnes & Noble would go under around Valentines Day 2018. Looks like I may end up being pretty close in my prediction.

Went into my store last Saturday, saw most of the same employees I usually see there, I didn't think I'd see any of the them after the layoffs.

It's funny, here in my small town, we have another huge book retailer, Books A Million, which was actually here first, opening back in the early 90s, B&N opening 5 or 6 years later. They actually have more floor space than B&N. When B&N came along I thought for sure that they'd put BAM outta biz, but they're still there. They've adopted many of the same strategies that B&N has, lotsa games and toys taking up floor space. I always thought they'd be the first to go.

I preferred Borders compared to Barnes & Noble but it'll be sad when they go. No more toy stores, no more book stores, no more video game stores. Amazon is gonna rule the world in time.

I'm not really seeing the point in renewing my membership this year with B&N come June. I don't shop in-store because I always get hassled about coupon usage. The on-line use 20% member coupon was about the only thing keeping me a member. And it seems we only get in-store 20% coupons now? Yeah, don't see the point.

The most telling line in the NYT article:

Quote:
Mr. Parneros is the company’s fourth chief executive to depart in five years.

At the B&N I go to, they stopped having a cashier in the movie/cd section and the lines up front are always long because they only ever have one person cashiering.

The most buying I see going on instore is at their Starbucks.
