The BFI release also has it but is marginally cropped to hide it a tad more. The forth caps from the top in all comparisons though on that page are the cropped versions of the original Critereon release which I saw at the time and as you can see is incorrect compared to all other releases.

Appears they corrected the cropping since however in the re-issue and BD, which is good to see.

Overscan likely would have made the BFI closer to what it should be (heck, excessive overscan would make the Australian disc correct too.)

Anyway, back on topic, all of Kurosawa on 4K UHD, please. (although, the region free-ness UHD likely will prevent that from happening because Toho are a bunch of dicks.)

No English subs. will easily prevent that.

I wasn't even thinking of a Japanese release as an unsubtitled release wouldn't do me any good, but I suppose that might happen. I assume the price would be exorbitant.

FWIW,

I got my 4K restoration "RAN" from Moviemars via Amazon. Loaded it into my LG UDP970 after changing it to Reg. B (very easy to do) and it played fine! It is an AWESOME looking picture. I am no expert and don't have the equip. to make the analysis others can but this disc is just sooo gorgeous! Right up there with one of my other fav discs, "Blade Runner 2049." This disc was put out by StudioCanal via Kodokawa. So basically, I guess a French disc ?? Thanks to all the great discussion I got from this thread!

The Kurosawa movie I'd really like to have in 4k Blu-ray is Dersu Uzala.
I saw it when it came out in the theatre. What amazing story and images. It is one of my all time favorites.

The DVD transfers are horrid. There's a blu-ray on amazon, but not a single comment about it. Has anybody tried it?

PS: Found a discussion in here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=290634

The Italian release I assume. Thread is here. No English subtitles.
